Why did Luke have a blaster in ESB?

He's a Jedi in training, so why would he have a blaster when he need's to learn how to use his lighsabre?

In the process of learning without a master at your side, and in dire times, it's always wise to carry a weapon you DO know how to use, alonside the weapon you hardly know to use.

Luke wasn't THAT great with a lightsaber. He was a trainee, he obviously wasn't going to want to go toe-to-toe with hordes of stormtroopers armed with a weapon he wasn't all that great with. He had some skill, sure, but it's easier to pick off stormtroopers with a blaster if you can use the blaster better than the lightsaber.

But after Dagobah he was still using his blaster. Then he has his fight with vader and does pretty well.

That is because if he used a blaster it would have zero effect on him. Yoda had sent him against a copy of Vader in Dagobah so he probably already knew he was going to face him with a lightsaber.

Probably standard issue with an X-Wing suit.

Plus it's always good to have a back-up weapon.

Luke is not just a Jedi in training but also a rebel fighter and under the command of the Rebel Alliance.
