A 4 yard pass happens but it's usually to quick for LB to take a run at him to knock him out. In slants, most tackles are the weak grab ones where the defensive player sees it and reacts but its too quick to actually hit him.

exactly. it is unlikely a LB is going to be able to light someone up on a pass that short, just wont have the momentum to do it. And I love how we mention 4 yard pass not really being over the middle so you come back with "not all passes are bombs down the field" NO SHIT! you dont think there is some middle ground between 4 yards and deep bombs?

Remember kids, stay in school.

And like I said, this simply isn't true. You don't need much momentum to light someone up in football. Have you ever seen a receiver get rocked on slant by a middle linebacker who just had to basically take 1 step and lean into the player with his shoulder? I don't know what game you guys have been watching, but plenty of big hits come from short passes, especially when it's over the middle.

You will see more big hits from linebackers on receivers than you will see from safeties. That's common knowledge.

This is just hilarious. PLEASE tell me you are joking.

First of all, no one mentioned "4 yard pass not really being over the middle", because I'm speaking specifically about 4-8 yard passes that ARE over the middle. Not 20 yard slant routes where the safety will actually come into play.

I have to remember I am arguing with two people who think linebackers don't make big hits on receivers on short passes. Lets not even mention the fact that many receivers do in fact get lit up in the exact spot of the field I am talking about, but what about receivers who already have made the catch and are running over the middle?

Ray Lewis the safety.

Look at all that momentum he had.

Madden Curse continues as Polamalu is out 3-6 weeks with knee injury.

Did you notice Ray lewis is about 12 yards down field? No one said a LB can not ever make a big hit on a player, it was said a Safety coming in with more momentum has more opportunity. And if a WR cuts IN FRONT (that guy did not come in front of Ray Lewis he was running out, and Lewis was dropped back in coverage) of a LB very short they do not have the same opportunity to really lay them out. Can they hit them hard? Sure they are still LB's but not the same as a DB coming in with a head of steam on a guy not ready.

What I was originally responding to was Smas' statement that big hits on receivers are rarely made by linebackers, which isn't true as most big hits on receivers ARE made by linebackers and over the middle to boot.

Hence Hines Ward needing to keep his ugly crying ass from running over the middle when the Steelers play the Bengals. Not only will Keith Rivers be looking to behead him, but now you got big Rey patrolling the middle, that's not good for Ward. After Rey lays the wood on him, he's going to go to the sideline and cry like he did tonight. He was crying right? He has such an overly large head and fat face that it was hard to tell if his eyes were really watering.

Maybe with all this free time Troy can head back to USC and make a speech to their LB's about how not to get clocked by 200 lb. wide receivers.

Sorry, I've seen alot bigger hits from safeties than LB's against a receiver.

It's bound that an LB can hit somebody like that but I find less frequent. Also, against somebody like Ward, I really don't see them doing it. He's a tough little bastard.

Mad because I don't talk more about Troy Polamalu and Lofa Tatupu?

I'm glad you don't talk about Troy. I'd hate for him to be included in that bunch of goofs you constantly defend to the death.

Which reminds me is this the year Mike Williams lives up to his hype or can we officially go with the BUST title now? I mean he did not play last year, and caught a total of 15 passes the 2 years before that. Can you muster the word BUST for one of your USC boys?

Maybe we can take the bust label off of Jarrett as well. Word out of Charlotte is that he actually made it to Page 2 of the playbook. I think Pete Carroll made a mistake when he enrolled Jarrett in Remedial Reading 101 at USC and paid off the professor.

Never, ever label Dwayne Jarrett a bust...he gave us one of the greatest moments in NFL Draft history when the Panthers drafted him and Keyshawn Johnson said he was excited to play with him, and the next week, Johnson's cut. Come on, that's gold!

Show of hands...who here thinks Evo should change his status from "Legendary" to "John David Boodylicious?"

I think you are being generous Alge Crumpler is looking like a lineman out there gotta be closer to 300.

Good news is the Steelers next 5 games are Bears, Bengals, Chargers, Lions, Browns. So an estimate of 3-5 weeks for him isnt too bad.

Jesus, for a Super Bowl champ, that's a pretty easy first 6 games.

Troy is the Steelers' best player. Don't underestimate the loss. They might not be the best D in the league right now because of it, and definitely won't be as dominant.

Steelers also can't run for s***. Expect silly numbers from Ben this year. Makes me a little salty I didn't pick him up in fantasy leagues this year.

Yeah, you get pretty choked up when you don't play like a Super Bowl MVP. Which he is. Must be hard for an athlete of his caliber to screw up once or twice in an entire season. Just like it's so easy to snipe on a guy for crying (which he didn't, btw...looking distraught isn't the same as crying). I can't imagine why a guy who dedicates his life to a sport, throws his body around without regard for his safety, and lives and dies with his team's successes, could get choked up over something like that. But crying's quintessentially unmanly, so let's act like stereotypical alpha males and make fun of him for it.

Until Cincinnati and Cleveland figure out which way to go on a football field, 1/4 of the schedule is going to seem easy, Super Bowl champ or not.

But don't underestimate the NFC North this year (the NFC division the Steelers play).

NFC North is pretty good, just so happens you get the 2 worst teams in the division first. But that means in the final 10 games you still have ravens twice, and the better half of the North.

Yeah, NFC north looks great, Chi with Jake, Min with Brett and GB with Aaron.

Steelers are AFC north and not NFC.

read the part in parenthesis

On a related note, I think i would commit suicide if I didn't know which division my team played in.
