Because Sonic wasn't made to be a powerhouse like Ike. What makes Sonic so deadly is his speed and the fact that many of his attacks look very similar till unleashed. Not to mention he's a pro at aerial combat including his back-A move which does amazing knock back and perfect to finish off falling enemies. Plus on smaller stages Sonic has the best recovery (better than Pit's) due to his unlimited usage of his homing attack and his spring gives him a huge jump.
Sonic has a higher learning curve than many of the newer characters (like Meta Knight). Seriously; I'm killer with Sonic. Never, never, never stand and fight a character with Sonic. Sonic is made for hit and runs to rack up damage then grab and do a back throw sending them over the ledge and go after them. Give them a good back-A kick to keep them back off. Or if they are pretty low just use the spring jump. The spring will fall and strike the opponent thus sending them down.
Or you can Sonicide yourself. That's when you jump off and just down-A them. You have a slight chance on being able to recover depending on how fast you are going (because sometimes Sonic will go very slow giving you a chance to live) and the knock down on the enemy will KO them.

If the character is over 120%. His side smash is the best of the three.
His back air A is good, I'll admit. I guess I don't like him because I do four man Brawl almost exclusively, and the harder hitters rack up the kills quicker in that format.

Me and my friend (he's always Kirby) always do online 2 vs 2 matches. He'll do a good ole fashion Kirbyicde which is always fun to do and I'll use Sonic. But on 4 man brawls Sonic isn't the best choice. That's more for Bowser and Ike right there.
