Super Mario Galaxy

Flawless = Perfection. As per the definitions of the words. Something can't be flawless but imperfect.

If not flaws, what keeps Mario 64 from perfection for you? Just curious, is all.

Just because something is 'perfect' does not mean everyone will like it, though. That's...fairly common sense. Ultimately personal tastes mean more as to how people think of things than how perfect it is (or isn't).

And it doesn't really matter that much if a game is flawless or not, anyway. FFX is a flawed game, for sure. I admit that. However, as far as I am concerned? That game IS perfect. Mario 64 may be near-flawless but it ain't perfect.

I just don't really think it's pure fun, as you said it was. It IS fun, but I have played a lot of games which I had a lot more fun with. I guess it's mostly the whole having to go through each level over half a dozen times to collect all the stars that ultimately shoved the game from the "pure fun" category for me. I wouldn't so much as say that's a flaw, though, but more me having an attention span that can't deal with that sort of repetition without wanting to play something else. When I was a kid and only had a few games to play, it didn't bother me, and I liked how it really added to the longevity of the game without making it really hard. Now, though, it just annoys me.

Example- Tetris.

Tetris is awesome.

That's fair, Lana. Completely understandable. In fact, I somewhat agree, though at least the levels changed slightly each time you had to go back, adding something new.

In Mario Galaxy the levels can change drastically each time you reenter to get a new star, sometimes to the point where there are new platforms or even planets, and even the entire layout is different.

And dont make the mistake of thinking that I was saying people had to like it, never said that. Just wanted to know what bugged you about it, is all.

I dunno why Lana is beating about the bush here.

The reason she will never find any Mario game perfect is because she likes best the games where she can form a deep emotional attachment with character and plot.

I dare Lana to say I am wrong.

I think the thing that ultimately annoyed me the most about the repeating levels thing is that you couldn't collect multiple stars on one run. Like, if I could have knocked off the red coins and 100 coins and another at once, that would have eased it by a ton, but nope, soon as you nab a star you're teleported out of the level.

And I actually HAVE played Galaxy as we've had it at work for a couple weeks...not been able to get more than 20 minutes in, though, due to people being unable to figure out how to unpause the game and resetting it instead 😛 I do very much want to actually be able to play it.

Damn you for knowing me too well!

There are a fair number of games I've played that I've liked a lot that I've NOT had that with though (like Portrait of Ruin and Puzzle Quest and...pretty much every game I've played prior to OoT) soooooo you're only partially correct.

I know.

What's funny about that, even though Mario games have no story, I feel more attached to Mario than most characters in long, storydriven games. Like, when Mario dies, it makes me feel worse than when

Spoiler:
Aeris died
in FFVII. I shouldn't have to put that in spoilers anymore, but I know of at least one person who hasn't played that game yet.

*Glares at Lana*

Go play it, for Christ's sake.

(yay I misread what you were referring to initially)

And I will. Eventually. Too many games I have to play right now though (which is not actually a huge number). And right now I'm debating with myself if I should buy a Wii or 360 in two weeks when I can kinda vaguely justify it.

I meant, play FFVII.

Damn you, you edited, now I look the fool.

What 360 games are you eyeballing?

What Wii games are you eyeballing?

I didn't say you only like games with such an attachment because you also like beating the crap out of stuff.

I said you like those games the most.

Beating the crap out of stuff IS a lot of fun.

Though my attention span is a lot shorter with those sorts of games.

Hmph. Once again. Damn you for knowing me too well!

I believe the majority still believe OoT to be the best Nintendo game, and if not, they probably think its either a 2D Mario or a 2D Zelda.

Well unless you find each and every member here and ask them that can be debatable. As good as Mario and Zelda games are you forget about Nintendo's other big house names. I'm sure I can find a few who would say Star Fox 64 is the best Nintendo game or Metroid Prime or even Super Smash Bros Melee and I'm sure others (not going to say any names) would say one of the Pokemon games to be the best or go old score with Super Mario Bros, 3, Zelda NES, or Metroid.

It just seems that you tend to leave out some of the great Nintendo games in favor of just Mario and Zelda and make it seem like that's all Nintendo really has.

Where as Zelda OoT (for me) would be in the top 10 but I liked A Link to the Past a lot more than I did for OoT (I guess it was because LttP was my first Zelda game played). Now I can't fully judge Galaxy yet myself because I haven't had time to dwell on it so I can't really judge where Galaxy would be for me but the game itself (to me) has been a more enjoyable experience then OoT.

Mainly because after playing NES Zelda (before I ever played OoT) I was hoping that this game would just allow you to do whatever dungeon you wanted to and for LttP you could basically do that in the Dark World which (to me) added replay value. That's just what I think and I believe that Mario Galaxy will be making appearences in the lists of greatest games of all time.

I never really cared for FFX that much (too many cutscenes!!). I couldn't get through a random encounter without a lengthy cutscene happening! FFIV will always be my favorite Final Fantasy game. Long live Cecil!!

That's why no game can truly be called the greatest game of all time.

Exactly. 😉

Everybody has their own standards and criteria for "the perfect game".

I actually have to say that Galaxy may be in fact my favorite game (but I'll have to give it a bit to determine that). SM64 was good but that doesn't mean it didn't have problems (so many glitches). Another thing was that traveling back to each level to collect more stars basically had you going through the same thing most of the time and Galaxy fixed that by really changing the galaxy themselves to make each visit a new experience.

But then again there's Super Mario Bros 3 which is really a difficult game to beat and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and A Link to the Past and Final Fantasy IV and Metroid Prime 3 and Star Fox 64 and Super Smash Bros Melee...I will have to come up with my own list of top games. Sonic 2 will be in the top three without a doubt and so will Super Mario Bros 3.

In my opinion, Super Mario 3 is the best platformer out there.

I've probalby gone through that game atleast 6 times. I cant get enough of it. About every 3 months or so, I go another round. Too damn fun.

Speaking of Mario Galaxy, when I first got to Sweet Sweet Galaxy, it was one of the rare times I shout in glee. It was fun. One thing I like that improved in Galaxy was that if you die, it takes you back to the checkpoint and not the galaxy screen like Mario 64 did. Makes the game alot better.

Yes! I'm so so glad they added checkpoints! This game would be so annoying and frustrating if they didn't.

Yeah, checkpoints are good for any platform/adventure game.
