Yes, it would have mattered. As popular a series as Super Smash is, most of everyone would've been like "Screw Super Mario Galaxy. I'm getting Brawl" if both games had been released around the same time. Because they weren't though, Galaxy alone sold a fortune for Nintendo. Brawl will do the same.
No it wouldn't. Maybe that what you would have said but not the majority. Only reason Melee outsold Sunshine was because Sunshine wasn't as good as it could have been. Sunshine had like 6 levels and was basically 64 but with a waterpack. And even then Melee barely outsold Sunshine (6.8 million to 5.91 million). Now we look at Galaxy; a game that surpasses 64 on all levels. Galaxy emerged as the most acclaimed game of 2007 winning both editor and reader's choice awards as the overall game of the year on popular gaming sites going up against games like BioShock, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Metroid Prime 3, Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, and the Orange Box (Half-Life 2).
Not to mention that preorders for the two games are vastly different. Galaxy had around 2 million preorders worldwide making it the highest preordered game in Nintendo's history. Galaxy would and will whoop Brawl's @$$ in every aspect from sales to overall gameplay.
