Considering gun deaths are at what did Ush say? 3,000? which isn't even .00001% of how many people own guns...that's a very good percentage.

30,000.

30,000 out of 300,000,000 people in United states that die a year. Hmmm, I suppose we are killing ourselves aren't we.

I think it is more than that...those are the people dying of being shot.

The annual death rate per 1000 persons in 1900 was 17.2 (Averaged.

2003, it was 8.3.

Yearly Gun Deaths:

Annual Deaths from Obesity since 2004:

*gasp* Guns are the enemy, ban them all and the U.S.'s problems are suddenly gone because so much less death. Methinks obesity is a bigger problem.

One of those was from the NRA website (NOT the front page) and the rest came from digging around the CDC website.

Now how many of the 12,129 homicides occured from legal gun owning folks?

Yeah..but how do you decide if someone died of obesity or well...if he had died anyways?

I don't know... that is probably harder to find out.

It is stated to be "probable" cause of death is related to obesity.

Anyways. Getting back on topic, banning guns would be a horrible idea in my opinion. Outlaws would still use guns, laws or no laws.
EXACTLY..........or rogue authorities........anyway the people of European are very small countries land wise compared to the US which is huge.........thus this with the melting pot contributes to many more problems then Europeans can understand.

It's like you actually think you are stuck in a cowboy movie. Funny.

For someone so keen on simplicity, is there any way you can refute the statement: 'If less people have guns, then less people will die from gun-related deaths'?

Oh, I thought not.

Now take away gun and insert car! I mean more deaths are caused by cars, they are EVIL.

Wow it all just makes so much sense now, thanks.

Why do I always stumble over the good debates after they've already been going for 20 or so pages?

I remember debating this in - get this - debate class in high school. I wish I could remember some of the references that were used in the debate, but here's the gist.

Banning guns does reduce the number of gun deaths somewhat (data wasn't available as to whether the deaths were "good guys" or "bad guys"😉.

An area that has sever gun control next to an area with light or no gun control experiences higher violent crime rates. This suggests to me that violent offenders are more reluctant to try anything where someone might have a gun. Notice this is violent crimes - rape, assault, robbery, muggings - these wouldn't show up in gun death statistics. An example is DC(Guns of any shape are pretty much banned) and Virginia(easy as heck to get a concealed carry permit).

Petty crimes - shoplifting, larceny and petty theft - remain fairly constant. These are crimes where the criminal wouldn't necessarily have to fear being shot even if there were a gunholder nearby.

I never read much about crime rates in Canada or UK, but in Australia violent crime skyrocketed after the firearms ban. Again, gun crime is not the only thing to fear.

The theory is basically heard protection. If a criminal knows that there are a lot of weapons in a certain area, he's going to avoid that area. If I live in that area, I'm protected even if I don't have a gun myself.

Again, sorry for the lack of references, it was years ago that I debated that.

Good post. Crime rate in Nevada's rural areas are pretty low thanks to almost everyone open carrying their firearm. People carry fully loaded handguns in their cars with no permit whatsoever. It's completely legal here in Northern Nevada. Rifles and Shotguns are also legal to carry in your vehicle fully loaded as long as there isn't a bullet in the chamber, it's perfectly legal to have those in the backseat of your car.

I can't recall Northern Nevada ever having a car jacking. I can't recall to many drive by shootings in the last 5 years. My my... criminals just don't seem eager to commit crimes when they know most of their potential targets are armed.

A lot of people that I know feel safe and protected living out here. They know if there isn't a cop around, someone will always have a gun nearby for emergencies.

Those you give up there natural rights from the beginning.......are....Not thinking..............why trust others in authority's for YOU!!!!

Again, you can't help but embarrass yourself. Since when has the primary function of a car been to cause another living thing harm?

Wow, the only purpose of a gun is to kill stuff...and it still kills less stuff than machines that aren't meant to kill. That's awesome! Get rid of cars!
