Guns are a tool solely used for killing and eating animals that are behind us on the food chain. Seriously, it doesn't get much more simplier than that. There's really no way you can guarantee that the crime would be lower if people used knives or crossbows. And what about the criminals using tazers, shockers, pepper spray, baseball bats, etc? If I got tazered or maced in the face, I'd be at the absolute mercy of a criminal. He or she could do whatever he wanted to do with me.

19th century: Alcohol prohibition. That got us no-where.
20th century: Drug prohibition. That turned out even worse.

And now gun prohibition??? You just know from the start that that's gonna cause even worse problems.
