Debra was the compelling and sympathetic character, and she's actually had an arc on the show. I like to say that Dexter's the star, Debra's the story.
Hall is a good actor, but Dexter is simply not (and has never been) a compelling protagonist. Just like Palpatine, as much as I love him, is not a compelling protagonist. A compelling protagonist should generally be likeable and sympathetic.
I've also said before that season 5 would have been a great ending. He consistently breaks even throughout the series--gains and loses a brother, a lover, a friend, a wife, and a Lumen. He has his son now, but he's still leading a life of secrecy and murderous urges. Everyone around him gets a happy ending (Deb with Quinn, Angel with LaGuerta, Masuka with Hooker), but he's returned to square one, surrounded by a veritable paradise that his killing produced. Breaking even in the end would have been very appropriate for a character whose premise is "doing good by doing evil."
And Neph I didn't mind season 6 as much. It felt more focused, and the Big Bad felt more threatening. It was the weakest of the first 6, though to be sure. 7 and 8 have been terribly misguided in their focus.

Never played it.
Well from a stranger on the Internet is is not exactly the same thing, I admit. But even though that word doesn't hurt me personally, I would be upset and intimidated if a group of football players (for example) was shouting it in my face.
There's only a few shows worth watching on tv like EVER. Not counting cartoons like the Simpsons, Family Guy, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force..
Macgyver, Always Sunny, Arrested Development, The Americans, and Boardwalk Empire.
This may be the greatest mix of catchy song and most hilariously misinterpreted video ever. I LOVE watching uncoordinated people dance.
