Whether that's true or not, I couldn't tell you.
As I understand it, psychological definitions are descriptive ones, which collate characteristics into broad categories. There is not (yet?) a single characteristic quality of sociopathy (or psychopathy, or autism, or bipolar disorder) precisely because the underlying (reductionist) physiological basis for behavior is so poorly understood.
Much like declaring Pluto a Dwarf-planet, Sociopaths are now defined as people who are selectively empathetic.

It's actually pretty normal to be selectively empathetic.. That is whether to family and friends or to those who share your values. I can say that I've been empathetic to those who don't share my values.. Just that it doesn't happen very often. I'm less empathetic to those affected by social networks, or words, or whatever.
