I don't trust simple survey research. I need to see some long, hard evidence for this claim. I'll do and donate my part.

Some of the comments are golden.
"I have been waiting for research to be done like this ever since i reached my teens, and i am so happy it has been done what great news, now how to get my girlfriend to take it seriously, im just trying to help"
and
"this article is a bit hard to swallow."
That's bordering on childish scripting, but draft scripts for other movies I've seen are far worse. Cracked posts some awhile back and the stuff left out or ammended before big movies hit the screen is shocking. Some writers are out of touch with reality.
I know I'm likely alone in saying this and risking geek pariah status, but I don't particularly care for Whedon. I've always considered his writing rather shallow and juvenile. I had to recheck imdb to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything he made that I did like really, but nothing shows up. Even The Avengers was okay and had some opportunities to be better. Things like Loki's trivial appearance at the end of the film, Hulk's random can now tell friend from foe, and the DBZ battle between Thor, Cap and Iron Man all were terrible ideas that did nothing to enhance the storytelling and struck me as something a 14 year old might inject into a fanfic cuz "it's cool".
Didn't care for Buffy or Angel either. Too smarmy and pretentious to be taken seriously, and if I wanted self aware comedy I have tons of other options that fare better. Can anyone tell me what the appeal is for this guy? Besides the idea "he is one of us" which is lol.
Whedon's something of an "all-over-the-place" kinda guy. In terms of quality work. His writing credits have him listed as a co-writer for things as varied in content and quality like Toy Story to Waterworld. Cabin in the Woods to Alien Resurrection.
Only Firefly stands out in his (primary) credentials as something akin to 'great'. And much of that was due to the skill and charm of the actors, I'm convinced. Most of the rest of his stuff is popcorn-flickish--like the Avengers franchise.

His skill as a writer is in characterization, I think. Though there is a detectable amount of smarminess in everything (one of the reasons I dislike Firefly, Mal is such a douche), he does a decent job of portraying people in a very casually human way. He also balances casts well, doing a good job of giving everyone at least one "likable" trait.
But beyond that, pretty much everything else he does is pretty "meh", nothing to write home about.
