He was caught on tape making racist statements against black people and other minorities. As of yesterday, he was banned for life from the NBA, fined 2.5 million, and the process has started for the NBA Owners to vote on a provision that would make him sell the team.
I don't know the NBA by laws but I don't think they can legally make him sell the team, and he has no intention of selling. The point is, it was huge news so I figured someone else followed it.
I thought the ban hammer was awesome. I'm surprised the new GM had the balls to do what he did. Everyone was happy of the outcome. The question is, is there any legal standing. California has a law about taping someone without the person's consent. So if this went to court, I don't think the NBA would win.

Depends on the charter or agreement the NBA had in place, but I'm pretty sure racism would be a termination clause just as in most employment situations. IIRC, there's also witness(s) to his remarks so the taping itself might not be as crucial.

Technically they do but there was mention of this going to an actual court of law. Again, I'm not clear on the bylaws other than the minimum requirement of 75% of the owners agreeing and that's just to get the process started.
And I'm not sure racism exists as a termination clause for the owner of a basketball team, especially since the commissioner technically works for the owners.
It's a good read. From what I understand, Sterling would most likely lose in court but it would be a long battle.
At the same time, I fully support what Mark Cuban said in terms of this being a slippery slope.
