I don't disagree with this, by the way. I've found it exceedingly difficult to explain the merits of the original material to people who refuse to read. But the realized drama, often spectacular casting (Clive Mantle as Greatjon Umber), abundance of striking men, and (almost most of all) the music make it eminently enjoyable nonetheless.
And hey, I didn't say I don't like the show. I do. But I am also highly critical of it and some of the choices it's made.
Also, do you ever get the impression that someone in the writing staff read the books and hated Stannis? 😬
He's such a c*nt in the show.

It's true, Game of Thrones is frankly babied down for a wider audience than the books are.
Go and read Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series. You will start perceiving "Game of Thrones" plots as childrens games. And G.R.R. Martin as a writer who is handling his characters in a rather friendly fashion...

So I decided to give Game of Thrones a chance, popped in an episode, and lasted about 20 minutes. This was basically Zombies+Renaissance Festival+porn.
You gave up on GoT?

First season was rather nice. Had a lot of fun watching the puppet master making everyone else dance. Trying to catch up on "The Blacklist" at the moment, since James Spader is simply great.

20 minutes? So you missed the incest, attempted child murder and other fun stuff?

Actually, it's quite great - though it's hard to read, as Erikson throws the reader into the midst of the storyline. But there is so much fun stuff going on in the latter volumes, that its absolutely worth reading them.
