Aside from the economic factors, people also do this when the story of the game is great but the gameplay itself is boring.
I really appreciate Bioware's inclusiveness regarding the looks of their protagonists. As an ugly person whose crippling lack of self-esteem compels me to subconsciously compare myself to fictional characters, Ryder's abominable looks are refreshingly unthreatening toward my sense of self-worth.
Now if they could just make her 300 pounds, I would truly feel zero compulsion to make changes to my life for the better.
