Does anybody know the name for the theory that states that there is an alternate universe for each of the potential choices that we never took in our lives (it might be slightly different, but it's at the very least something like that) out of curiosity?

Serious question here though, one of which has been logged in the back of my mind since the beginning of the 2008 campaigns: Is obama considered African American, despite having one parent of each race? and if so, how does that work? Does one heritage overpower the other, or something?
