As for the murder of one man to save a thousand other: I've gone over this any number of times--no, I would not murder an innocent man to save another. I would not murder a baby to save another. To do something like that...is to fall into the idea that the ends justify the means, that the greater good outweighs the sacrifice used to attain it.
To be fair the hypothetical offered was not the trade of one life for another, it was one life balanced against the life of 1000 other people, presumably equally as innocent.
