The Departed (2006)

I thought the movie was the best I'd seen this year so far.

It was gritty, great script, and just flat out f-ing hilarious.

The end shot, I felt, was absolutely excellent: with the rat and the shot of that golden building.

Why? Because the entire movie and plot revolved on the fact that there were rats in each unit.

A symbolic image at the end that encompasses the whole movie is perfect.

Mark Wahlberg deserves an Oscar nod!!!!!

And I agree: the scene with Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin was awesome. Personally, I thought the rugby game in the beginning was the funniest scene in the film.

And, I love the fact that every major character dies in the end except for Wahlberg, who was the most honest character in the film, except for Sheen and Anderson (who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time)

My favorite scene is the ending, excluding the rat. Wahlberg is the ****ing man, he definitely deserves a supporting actor nod.

Never before would I have expected Marky Mark of the Funky Bunch to be the best part of a film.

I think we need a "favorite character in The Departed" poll. My vote would go to Jack Nicholson. He was ace.

The last shot was absolutely trite. Yeah, the entire movie and plot did revolve around there being rats in each unit, which is precisely why that final shot was god-awful. There was absolutely no need for it. As a symbol you would be more likely to find such redundency in a over-the-top blockbuster, not a well-crafted movie about stealth and deception like 'The Departed'. Anyway, I've got nothing else to say on that stupid shot, because on the whole I did actually like the movie.

As for favorite character, ol' Marky Mark wins it for me. The guy was absolutely perfect and completely hilarious.

Has Martin Scorsese ever made a movie not set in New York?

Um... the departed took place in Boston. Right?

Right. And I'm pretty sure 'Kundun' was a little past the Hudson, too...

Just checking! Danke! Danke schön!

dont want to sound stupid but what was the deal with the golden building?

Thanks so much for spoiling the ending for me. 😠

Jeez.

I was really excited for this film, and I'll still see it, but now I know what happens.

Next time use spoiler tags:

It's mostly your fault, though. Why read through a discussion thread and not expect to see a discussion taking place?

I saw it Saturday and was surprised by the ending but MORE surprised that i hadnt read about it beforehand.
Staying spoiler free is hard these days.
A classic - i missed Scream at the cinema and went through six months of avoiding spoilers until its VHS release,so i rent the video the day of release and my girlfreind of the time puts it in the VCR WITHOUT rewinding and it comes onscreen with Matthew Lillard and the other dude acting all psychotic, covered in blood confessing to the murders.............now THAT was annoying.

the final shot wasn't entirely redundant. i got from it that all rats get justice, and whether if it's for "good" or "evil" doesn't really matter. and promoting that honesty with the shot of a capitol building also sort of implies a political "rats in the house" statement.

Yeah, I know.

Sorry to the original poster, I was having a bad day at work.

It was just the total random placement of the ending, in the post, that I didn't know was coming by scanning the page.

I'd read 5 or 6 reviews of this already on AICN, and considering the way their talkbacks are, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the ending.

I assumed that Leo D. caught Matt D. and that all the bad guys died, like most cops/robbers movies.

It quite surprised me when I read that, and then I was pissed for reading it, since it would have been a big shocker in the cinema.

Oh well, my bad for overreacting.

From what it sounds like, you haven't got it completely spoiled yet. So, hurry and see it.

No, I read that

Spoiler:
every major character except for Mark Whalberg dies
, so unless there's more to be spoiled, I know what will happen.

Still goin to see it, though. 😎

People who give endings away to movies should be burned at the stake..
