What bad things have you heard exactly?
First off. The Hyped of Sword play is said to be awful and that's not hard to imagine.
The story isn't that good.
The voice acting is bad.
The dialogue itself awful.
The game-play is nothing new. Same old same old. The only thing that redeems it at all is the new Wii Controller. Without that, it wouldn't have anything going for it.

Actually my advice to you is to rent it first. It might not be your cup-O-tea.
I was really sad about the bad reviews of Red Steel too. And I had given up all hope of buying it, it turned into an "oh well I guess it sucks...thats a shame" in my mind, but then I rented it just for kicks.
Me personally, Well I have to take my rented copy back tomorrow, but I'm immediately going from Blockbuster to EB to buy Red Steel.
The reviews, IMO, are just wrong. This game is at least an 8.5. Matt on IGN admitted too that a lot of his friends had gotten past the initial control difficulties and are really enjoying the game. I think this is the best way of putting it.

I'm not sure, check IGN or Gamespot. I love the explosions in this game, from a distance with the smoke effect and stuff, its like a mini mushroom cloud kinda effect (but quicker and not as much after smoke) The golden colour of the flames is sweet. Anyways, I wished more stuff exploded in this game cause not only is it fun, but it looks cool too.
Oh and to add into my review something I forgot is that the enemy rag-doll death physics are pretty good too. Forgot about that.

Well, I've caved in and ordered it. I was very sceptical about this, but now there has been some better feedback, and the ign Australian/UK review at ign review was totally at contrary to the earlier one... and... well, basically., this is quite an important test bed game for the Wii experience. I am sure it won't be so bad that I'll think it's a total waste. Average will do me.
