Well, Miles is an interesting case. He hadn't played in 2 years due to microfracture knee surgery and was struggling to show progress. After a certain amount of time, you can request a league and players' union appointed doctor to examine an injured player to determine if there is a reasonable chance that the player will be able to ever play again. The doctor came to the conclusion after inspecting the knee that the damage was bad enough that Miles would likely never be able to play again. At which point, the Blazers could release Miles and have insurance pay for part of his salary while none of his salary counts against the salary cap. The only way the salary can start counting against the cap again is if the player plays 10 games in the next 2 seasons (I'm not sure if it is 10 games in either 1 of the 2 seasons or a combined 10 games over the course of 2 seasons, but that part won't likely matter). So if Miles plays 10 games, the money starts counting against the Blazers salary cap again. No player has ever come back after such an appointment where they were determined to have had a career ending injury, so Miles would be the first if he does so. The contract he signed with Boston is non-guaranteed though and the Celtics said he has a couple of months to prove his worth, meaning they will likely evaluate him through practices and pre-season and should have a decision by the time the season starts.
ah right i kinda get the idea now. it can get well complicated when you live overseas as nota whole lot gets explained. cheers myth, fountian of all basketball knowledge you be!
that rudy dunk was sick.... not my favourite dunk ever but it was damn good. we were hardly shown any olympic basketball in the uk, i'm gonna have to try and find some on youtibe or the bbc website i think. i even fancied watching the womens usa team play australia. basketball reasons of course 😄
cant believe theres two months still to the beginning of the league. soooo wanna see how jermaine o'neal does with the raptors.
got a question too my american friends....
how valuable are basketball cards? i've had some for ages, cant even remember where i got them but i think they're all from (bar the odd couple) teh 96/97 season, and i have a few of some of the more well known players.... scottie pippen, clyde drexlar.. few blazers ones too myth 😉 i also have a michael jordan card from the 96' season, when the bulls had the most wins record in nba history. anyone know if they're worth anything?
It really depends on the brands and years. Starting about 1989, basketball cards got super popular so anything that is not an insert (usually a fancy card that is way different from most the others in the pack) that came after 1989 is not too rare and thus not too valuable. I'm going to throw out a common brand to give you a hint at the value. Lets pretend the players that you mentioned are cards of the Fleer brand name. I'm not looking up the value, but a '96 Fleer Pippen is probably worth about a $1-$1.50. Drexler is probably $.50-$.75 and Jordan is probably $4-5. Inserts are a whole different ball game. Some inserts are so common that they are cheaper than the regular cards, while others are in the 100s of dollars (those are pretty dang rare though). Now if you have a Kobe Bryant rookie, that would be worth some good money. Likely anywhere from $6-25 depending on the brand.
There are magazines called "Becketts" that are way more accurate with pricing if you are really curious, or if you search a bit you may be able to find a limited pricing guide through the internet (you'd likely have to sign up using your email if you find a decent free one). Sorry, I do not know of any free sites off the top of my head, but there are some out there. If you don't want to do that but still want a little bit better idea of prices, you could say brands or certain rookies and I could do my best to make educated guesses at a card's general price range. Inserts are way harder to guess though.

Oh, and I know it is lame, but for some reason things like that don't seem to add value to cards, it is simply how rare they are. It would be cool if things like that effected value more. Like a Kobe from this last year should be worth more because it was his MVP year, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

I remember him well from his days with the Blazers, very underrated scorer in the post. Sounds like a good guy as well.
