I only watched the Ben Cross version of Dark Shadows (back in the 80s, was it?). I was so hooked on that but was sad that it lasted just one season. It was a really interesting show at that time on TV in a sea of banal cop shows. It's been a long time since then so gals, can you refresh my fuzzy memory? Who were the main characters and what was the show about? I only know that the Ben Cross guy didn't like his vampireness and he became one because of Angelique, right? And yes, there was a dark-haired actress (pretty..) who was his main love or something like that.

would that be Josette?
i dont know, see i've only seen clips on youtube and there are many women in Dark Shadows it seems hard to keep up! but i liked what i saw and i wish they had the seasons on video!!!
I think Barnabas became a vampire because of Angelique. Does Angelique love Barnabas? and why is everyone in the show a Collins? lol...Why does Josette really trust Barnabas? why was angelique pretending she was dead and that she was her sister? Angelique I take it is evil? is Barnabas evil? and who is Laura Collins the clip i saw said it was his wife? I'm soooo confused!! 😕 lol

The series can be really confusing sometimes, especially because 1/4 of it is spent in the current time period, 1/4 in 1795 (Flashback), another 1/4 in 1890s (another flashback) and 1/4 in some alternate universe (or so I've been told, I haven't made it that far in the series yet)
Josette DuPres Collins was Barnabas Collins' love and fiance`, but her handmaiden Angelique, (who is also a witch) loves Barnabas (really, really loves Barnabas) - she casts a spell on Josette to make her fall in love with Barnabas' uncle, Jeremiah - Leaving Barnabas for herself 😉 Long story short, Angelique finally turns Barnabas into a vampire. Part of his curse is he can only live by night and by the blood of the living, and anyone whom he loves will die (this happens over and over, people he loves (including family) die in his arms - so sweet and sad.
Okay, now to the questions....
1. Yes, Angelique really does love Barnabas, he simply does not return her affection (he once did, then he met Josette)
2. Everyone in the show is a collins b/c they are the most influential family in Collinsport (where the show takes place) - Everybody is a collins or wants to become a collins through marriage.
3. When Josette and Barnabas first met (in Martinique) - he was not a vampire. They truly fell in love, complete trust etc. She later learns he is a vampire and almost becomes one herself. Then, Angelique makes Josette hallucinate and shows her a vision of the horrible beast she could become by being with Barnabas as she stands at the edge of Widow's Hill. Barnabas runs up to her, pleading for her to come away from the edge lest she falls, she becomes very scarred of him and when he trys to pull her from the edge, she yanks herself away and falls from the cliff - dying on the rocks, which leaves Barnabas heartbroken for the rest of eternity ( can you feel the angst?)
4. Ah, you saw a clip that took place after the 1795 flashback (where Angelique is from) and actually took place in the present time. Being a witch, Angelique came forward in time to torment Barnabas and attempt to destroy him once more. Obviously, she could not go by the name Angelique (as the current Collins family was aware of who Angelique was) - she came up with the name Laura and married one of the Collin's men (not Barnabas of course) by bewitching him into marriage, effectively placing herself right in the center of the household.
Its an AWESOME series, I haven't seen the 90s version, just the original (which Johnny was a big, big fan of). You guys should totally check it out if you can - Barnabas is this amazing guy - a romantic in every sense of the world, full of angst and everything, yet a total tough guy when it comes to being threatened. And he bites necks on there a lot 😛
It will be a toughie to cast, at least I think. I really see someone like Kate Winslet being Josette, someone with that kind of grace to really pull of the part. There are *so* many female cast members though - all of them are victims or love interests of Barnabas at some point - women just love him to death 😉
Sorry for the long ramble, I am so in love with this series - if anybody has any more questions, just let me know...i'm about 3/4 of the way into the series right now, so I should be able to help.
And....last but not least....for all of those on here who are interested in not only DS but POTC as well, I wanted to let you know there may be a crossover fic in the near future written by me and Gylzgirl (author of "Fate Intervenes" and "Ghosts"😉 😄 Oh yes, Jack the Vampirate (mwahahaha)
Oh, I realized I skipped a question or two, I'll commence the rambling once more:
Barnabas Collins is not evil, he is morally ambiguous. He is the classical reluctant anti-hero, he was the first vampire in history (on TV at least 😛) to be reluctant and not a vampire that loved the bloodlust. It disgusts him, he hates his existance and how he lives...yet he cannot kill himself and must continue to exist...he continues to fight for his existance even though he despises it (they discuss that in some of the dialogue, its really neat.). Yes, he murders occasionally and makes slaves out of his meals, but he is by all accounts a good man who loves a few women (both living in dead) with all of his heart - if he needed, he would die for them. (*burries head at how whelpish that sounded*). One of my favorite examples is how much he loves his little sister, Sarah...he consents to marry Angelique and give up his pursuit on the recently widowed Josette (long story) for her to work her special tea (aka a spell) and cure his sister of her mysterious illness. Eventually, through Angelique's antics, Sarah becomes ill once more and actually dies in Barnabas' arms - her last words being "I love you, Barnabas. I'll miss you" or something like that - Had me practically sobbing. He can be so comforting like that, cradling his little sister's weak form...then go and feast on blood from some innocent strumpet on the docks. So yes, you gotta love a man who is morally ambiguous...makes the character soooo much more interesting 😉
So, is Angelique evil? IMHO, in the begining she *totally* was. She practically destoryed an entire family simply to have Barnabas to herself - she killed, manipulated and all sorts of things to gain his love...which he would never give her specifically *for* destroying his life, his future, his love and his family. And she doesn't just stop in her own century, she plagues Barnabas over and over and over again...trying to get revenge for his killing her, but still loving him...lots of angst and confusion. HOWEVER, in the recent episodes she has begun to change...she has become less of a control freak and her regard for Barnabas seems more genuine...she watches out for him, protects him more. She is becoming less evil (which is very nice 😉)
Did I ramble to much? Alas, 😛 Can you tell how geeky I am about this series now? There is a *fantastic* Dark Shadows Wiki site..uh...I think it is www.collinwood.net - they've got all kinds o' info if you'd like to get the same information minus my ramblings, lol.
Diva, I wished we lived closer to each other, we could have a Dark Shadows marathon, lol!
Savvy, thank you for telling us about Dark Shadows. Sounds very confusing and convoluted but very very interesting for Johnny to act his butt off! I wonder which storyline the producers would choose for the movie version. Since this was a TV series, would the movie then have an ending? When did Dark Shadows end its run? What was the finale about?
Hmm...Kate Beckinsale can either be Josette or Angelique or both. I'm even thinking Winona Ryder as Josette. Kate Beckinsale was in Jerry Bruckheimer's Pearl Harbor and I thought she could pull off her role quite well. She can play both sweet and dangerous. As for Winona, well, see her in Dracula and you'll know what I mean.
Yeah, its definitely confusing if you watch part of the series without seeing the whole thing - like any soap opera is. Well, I haven't gotten to the finale yet, but I heard the TV ending was really bad - the show got canceled very suddenly and there was absolutely no closure, the totally left you hanging.
Yeah, I could see Winona as Josette. I looked at the trailer for Pearl Harbor, and Kate looks like she does a great job - don't hate me, but I still can't quite see her as Josette or Angelique - maybe its just because I'm comparing her too closely to the characters set up in the series with the work of hers that I have seen...I dunno. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of Kate (*dodges tomatoes*)
Oh, I just thought of something - they my might base the storylines off of the two movies thta were made instead of right off of the TV series - Night of Dark Shadows and House of Dark Shadows...
Oh this is sounding better and better. I love you for telling us about it savvy...just two more questions and I'm good. Does Barnabas kill Angelique in her own time? And is Josette dead for good when she dies on the rocks? Cause you mentioned her being widowed so I thought maybe she's also in the future.
It's certainly confusing but interesting. I can't wait...Johnny would be great as Barnabas. I'm not so sure he'll be starring in it though...He's definitely producing it. He's officially producing it. I'm not so sure Kate would be good in that movie but the casting IS pretty hard.

Aw, np - I love to talk about my favorite series 😛
Yays, more questions!! 😄 😄 😄
1. Barnabas kills Angelique for the first time in her own time, but being a witch, she keeps finding ways to come back to him (lol) - so he actually kills her several times and she comes back later on, she always finds a way.
2. Yes, once Josette leaps from the rocks she is dead. Barnabas (as a vampire) tries to resurrect her, but it fails and he lets her return to her grave. However, she does visit the series as a ghost, heard sobbing by friends/allies of Barnabas whenever he is in peril (can I hear an "awwwwwww"😉 😍 So, Josette herself never comes back, but the actress is used over again - it sounds weird but it actually works out. When Barnabas first meets Maggie Evans (by the same actress who played Josette) he bites her and bewitches her with his vampire powers to brainwash her into a new josette for himself - which also backfires. Poor Barnabas.
Did I explain clearly enough? Any more qs? *looks hopeful*
Oh yes, Johnny will be an amazing Barnabas Collins I think - he seems to love that tortured soul idea. There is also this character, Reverend Trask (The witch hunter) who would be played perfectly by Alan Rickman *sigh*
I can't wait to see Johnny with fangs 😮💨
*faints*
"NEW YORK (Nov. 1) - Johnny Depp says his 8-year-old daughter is now healthy and well following her hospitalization earlier this year.
"Now every single millisecond is a mini-celebration," the 44-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly in its Nov. 9 issue. "Every time we get to breathe in and exhale is a huge victory. She pulled through beautifully, perfectly, with no lasting anything."
Lily-Rose, the daughter of Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis, was admitted to a British hospital to receive treatment for an undisclosed ailment about three weeks after Depp started work on "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," Tim Burton's adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical about a murderous barber.
"To say it was the darkest moment, that's nothing," Depp tells the magazine. "It doesn't come close to describing it. Words are so small. But knowing that those people, Tim and the crew, shut down and stood by and waited ... I didn't know if I was coming back. I remember talking with Tim, saying, `Maybe you need to recast."'
"Once we were given the all-clear, I had to dive back into the work," he says. "I had to get back in there for Tim."
"Sweeney Todd" is set for limited release in the U.S. next month.
Depp and Paradis also have a 5-year-old son, Jack.

Thought I'd share what I found 🙂
