I'm actually sitting here, angrily complaining to an empty room out loud. I am full-on ranting to myself about how terrible this show is.
And the weird thing is that I'd struggle to point out why the show is so bad. If asked I'd have to just say its everything. Every single aspect of it is bad. The music, the direction, the writing, the plot, the characters, the actors, its all awful. I hate Dexter from every angle you can hate, both the show and the person. Fuuuuck this show!
Edit: And now to re-watch Season 1.

I'm now convinced they only brought Hannah back when they decided to
Spoiler:and had to give Harrison to someone. Didn't want everyone to feel bad for the 3 year old.
kill off Deb
She really was. Aside from being an all around poor substitute for a romantic interest in place of Rita and Lumen, she was also dull. Her tone of voice and emotional inflection was flat and lifeless. It's odd that I get the feeling that the actress was trying, but the performance felt very phoned in. Rita and Lumen had some energy and passion to their characters, and their own clear and unique personalities. Hannah was just a warm body and a plot vessel.
I still can't think of all the ways the episode failed but this and this sum up a lot of them.
Btw, I still maintain that the first 5 seasons are good. Some were weaker than others (3 and 5) and the show definitely started to pick up bad habits and losing its tension as it went on. But I think its only in season 6 when all those negatives drowned out the positives. The tension was utterly gone. The writing severely suffered. Dexter became far less interesting as he became more human. Direction and music became worse. The charm dried up. The villains became shit.
I think that last one in particular sucked. Doomsday was terrible. He was a completely non-threatening nerd with no presence and wasn't interesting. Season 7 didn't even have a main ****ing villain. And the Brain Surgeon was the worst, most badly acted and least interesting one of the bunch. People say that Jordan Chase was a lame villain, but he was still a distinct level above those guys. Remember his scene with that woman where she tries to touch him and he starts freaking out? That was spectacularly creepy. Everything with that woman was creepy as **** imo. Plus he had good interactions with Dexter and I really liked how he mirrored Dexters arc for the season. It just shows that even a guy most people thought was bad was still a cut above the most recent baddies.
Though I agree that the season 2 storyline would have been better as the final season. It was great as it was because you didn't expect it to happen so soon, but I think they blew their "Dexter's hunted" load too soon.

I speculate that they originally intended it to end there. Remember Dexter's daydreams of being lauded as a hero? I think before that season began, they got word that this was the last one (funding or something). But then ratings picked waaaay up and they got a new season. Too late, already wrote and shot most of the season, had to keep going.
That's the only way to explain the second season in any sort of reasonible way.
I quite like this as a rewrite of the last few seasons:
Remove the entirety of season 6. Merge the finale of 5 and 6. Deb catches Dex and Lumen making the kill. The initial new S6 is now a mix of the ideas in S7. Deb saw Lumen kill someone which she's somewhat ok with since she understands what Lumen went through BUT the kill room setup which dexter helped with reminds her of Brian. She puts the pieces together throughout the season about what Dexter actually is. LaGuerta is also closing in on Dexter and S6 now ends where S7 does: Deb kills Maria.
S7 (the final season) is the house of cards falling down. Batista finds the warrants for Deb and Dex's phones and it plants a seed of doubt. Season revolves around Dexter getting caught. By now Lumen is firmly in love with him but knows they don't have a future in Miami. She leaves with Harrison to NOT ARGENTINA and Dex tries to escape but gets caught with Deb dying in the process. He gets the chair but Harrison is spared.
If you absolutely need a bad guy in each season have Sirko be the bad guy for 6 (kills Quinn instead of Mike) and don't have one for the final season: Dexter IS the bad guy.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how they'd do things differently? I for one liked having Deb figure it out so quickly in season 7 and wouldn't try to tease it out over a season. And I'd like them to make that a huge part of the season and have them really discuss it, instead of what they actually did, which was have Deb not want to talk about it and basically just inject her knowing back into the status quo. Maybe even have her decide to turn him in and have Dexter being forced to lock her in a cage like he did to Doakes until he can convince her. Theres so much potential there that I think the pussed out on.

I'll answer this question and comment on that re-write in a few weeks. Seems silly of me to point out but I have some catching up to do.

Horrible ending. He leaves the kid because he feels he destroys everything he touches. Who he leave him with? A woman that destroys everything she touches!
I liked the ending actually. The woman would die for Harrison, that's my belief anyway.
Plus! She's a hot Australian Actress.. 😆
Dexter spin-off will BE..... Lumberjack Dexter. 😐
Please... please don't.

After that, it was all shit rolling down hill.
For the last few days, I've been rewatching season 4. It has been a few years and I have to admit....it was the best.

He had cancer while doing Dexter. He is in remission now.
