That's not the reaction anyone got. You making that up. They weren't psychotic just plain weird and annoying...see, that entire scene were their chatting on the cell phone was pointless and stupid. What was the purpose of those two? See, that same essence of criticism you're applying to Death Proof should be apply here.
Except in Planet Terror the pointless/stupid aspect lasted less than a minute, where as in death proof it was most of the movie. Sadly.
Death Proof was a mess, as far as writing goes. Out of all the dialogue that was spewed fourth, barely any of it ended up paying off. Their little conversation about whatever TV Car Show they liked paid off because it set up the car chase scene, that was it. All the other dialoge was filler, as if Tarantino wrote the film, realized it was about 40 pages too short, and just added another Coffee house scene and some obnoxious black girl and any number of other pointless dialogue scenes that went no where.
If you have an assload of dialoge in a film, it needs to go somewhere, it needs to be for the purpose of setting something up later, so we see it and go "Ohhh, that's why that dialogue was there, it enhanced this later scene". Of course, dialogue is also used for character development, but with this movie it was the ONLY character development for the girls, and I hate to say it, but using nothing but dialogue to develop characters is lazy and honestly, poor writing. There was a reason why Kurt Russels character was far more engaging and well developed then any of the chicks, because he had some character development that went beyond dialogue. There are so many other more effective ways of building character, having nothing but dialogue is not only couter productive, but it's boring.

They talked about things that fit their characters. You know why most slasher films fall flat on their ass? Because they introduce characters and later kill them without giving us a chance to get to know them. I mean if you're all for just killing the characters in short time period without getting to know them...then by all means this film is going to bore you. Also, because you didn't connect with the dialogue it doesn't mean that the characters are lame. These are young girls looking for a good time and which later become victims. Yes! We've seen this in countless genetic slasher films...but which of those films ever bother with giving us a more open view in the character?
What is the best way to get to know a person? you listen to them. You listen to their dialogue. The film did achieve that...you found it boring. Well, that's you and a few others. I found it to be a necessity to build the emotions when later we see them die in a cruel fashion.
Even if you say that Death Proof fails is still doesn't dismiss the faulty and genetic Planet Terror. Entertaining? Yeah, I'll give you that. PT is entertaining. Is it a good film? Hell no! That's like me saying "I love The Toxic Avenger....therefore it's the greatest film ever made"
See the difference?
No, most slasher films fall flat on their ass because they're generic, cliche and predictable, AND because the characters suck.
I'm not complaining that the characters were developed, just the lazy method he went about it. In real life, yeah the best way to get to know someone is listening to their dialogue, in film, it's just one of several ways, there needs to be a combination of things - dialogue, action, history, visual responses and so on. That's why other Tarantino films work so well, he has this wonderful dialogue AND the other aspects that are necessary to create deep and involving characters, and the dialogue ends up going somewhere as it often hints at future events in the film. In Death Proof, all he used was dialogue, and it wasn't even very good, and the scenes of dialogue lasted far too long, and most of it was just a dead end. Like that utterly pointless cell phone text messaging scene.
If Planet Terrror was entertaining then it's already served its purpose. It's entire point was to be nothing other than simple silly fun. Planet Terror isn't a masterpiece, of course, but it's competent, it flowed well, had identifiable characters, and developed these characters without having 20 minute stretches of pure dialogue. It knew what it was, Death Proof didn't.
I couldn't agree more. Deathproof had way too much teenage girl dialogue, and i don't think it contributed to the movie at all. There was lame talking lame talking lame talking then a really cool car crash scene, then lame talking lame talking lame talking and a very unsatisfying ending.....
Maybe it would've been better if it wasn't following Planet Terror, which i LOVED!!! if you're talking about plot then planet terror was lame, but in the sense of sweet zombie movie, I LOVEED IT!! sweeeet.
And the fake previews were rad. my favorite was Thanksgiving. Especially when the guy in the suit got his head cut off the the cop and the other guy went up to it, and the guy put his finger in the blood and licked and was like, "it's blood," and the cop was like, "son of a *****."
I just saw it and loved it!
Planet Terror was f*cking awesome!
Death Proof wasn't nearly as good if you ask me. Mainly because Planet Terror and the trailers did the whole Old School 70's thing SO well, and Death Proof kind of killed it.
That and I know Tarintno added in the long talking scenes to let the audiance get to know the characters, but honestly, the longer the girls in the first half of Death Proof talked the more I wanted them to die! And when they did (except for the first girl), I was cheering.
If Death Proof had better editing it would have been a hell of a lot better if you ask me 😬
But the Car Chases and the ending were awesome!
now it seems we are getting Grindhouse as two seperate flicks in the UK although this news changes daily
why no official comment
it says that the company behind it are viewing alternatives whatever the **** that means
seems there are a lot of brain dead american cinema goers out there whod rather watch ARE WE DONE YET than something unique
to all those who did go to see Grindhouse in the US and see it they way it was meant to be seen i envy you
Death Proof is up for nomination for the palme dOr at the forthcoming Cannes festival and hes rumoured to be showing a near two hour cut
http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/news.php?id=5699
this Grindhouse biz gets stranger by the day
well we are now not getting a release of Grindhouse AT ALL in the UK
it may be going straight to DVD or we may be getting Death Proof with an extra hour added in Sept
well thats ****ing great isnt it
so much for the average american cinema goer
at least the release of ARE WE ****ING DONE YET? is a cert
**** **** ****!!!!!!!
Wow...someone just said they thought it was lame that there was so much talking in a Quentin Tarantino movie?
Haha, that really makes me laugh. Personally...I don't even have to touch that one.
Deathproof is going Cannes mutha****as, it's obviously a good flick. LOL. Don't get all offended...I'm just being nasty for my own enjoyment. If you got a problem with it then go to hell. hehe It's there with Zodiac so they can prove that all hope isn't lost in American genre cinema. The last good thriller was Silence of the Lambs. Then they became slashers...and...remakes of slashers. I weep for what has become of the film industry. Especially when there's complaining about too much dialogue in a movie was was so solidly written.
This makes me happy.
im about to watch it on pirate
not the way i wanted to see it and im ****ing annoyed that i have to see this flick on a cam pirate but im not shelling out for two seperate flicks
a cinema trip is usually about £50 for me and the chick so x2 for a flick intended as two for one **** that
i could wait for the import dvd release but thats six months off
so cam copy with people walking past screen with shite sound it has to be
****ing Weinstein **** **** **** ****
I was slightly dissapointed by Planet Terror as i was expecting a spot on homage to the likes of Lucio Fulci or Umberto Lenzi with an Alan Howarth/John Carpenter circa 1981 score but all i got was just another horror flick with some funny parts more Slither than anything from the 70s or early 80s that ive ever seen.
Having said that they pulled off the stuff at the hospital well as they looked very retro and for Rose McGowan she was totally ****ing hot.
The trailers were great though i dont get the fuss over MACHETTE
DONT was by far the best of the bunch and the repeated cry of DONT DONT DONT DONT and the images along with it were pretty ****ing scary as for Thanksgiving and Rob Zombies efforts they were pretty on the nail as far as pastiches of early 80s Horror movie trailers go and it was good to see Tom Towles,Sybil Danning and Udo Keir in the latters piece.
As for Death Proof i fell asleep when Rosario Dawson arrived with her 3 "girlfriends" but i enjoyed it on the whole up to that although the dialogue was trying too hard on the too cool for school stuff...its as if a lesser screenwriter was mimicking old big chin as opposed to it being from the pen of Tarantino himself.
When i watched the rest of the flick i found it very satisfying, the car chases were great and Kurt Russell was as always fantastic and this time wonderfully over the top...good to see Earl McGraw and son number 1 again too.
Im just very bitter at the circumstances i had to see this movie on a cruddy pirate after months of looking forward to seeing it on the big screen...screw Pirates and Spidey this was the big summmer flick for me and im well pissed off i had to suffer my first pirate in 10 years over this flick.
Ill be there on Sept 6 to watch the extended cut of DP on the big screen without the blurry and the shillouettes of people going for a piss though.

.
Personally, i felt as though that was intentional. The entire movie was over the top and exagerated. In every other tarentino movie, His dialogue comes across to me as someone with a higher intelect trying to communicate to me, Death proof came across as someone with an average intellect trying to communicate to someone of a higher intellect. The dialogue i felt was very funny in it's over effort. You can see the contrast in the dialogue from the first half of the movie to the point where the three main girls were introduced. So i think it was eigther intentional, to further highlight the spoof aspect of "cool" horror flicks, or there only to show that the chicks were a conceited bunch
