El Bastardo
I saw Grindhouse last night, and I gotta say, I wasn't all that impressed. In fact, I thought most of Tarantino's Death Proof was extremely boring. The scene where the second set of girls is eating lunch and the camera floats around capturing their conversation was very frustrating to sit through. The shot itself was impressive in that it was probably the longest uncut shot in film history, and if the actresses actually remembered the entire scene without cue cards, then yay. However, the dialogue in that scene was soooooooooooooooo damn boring. Kurt Russel was gold, the car scenes were awesome, but the dialogue just made it suck, I thought it was really really lame.
Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror was a decent zombie movie at best, I enjoyed it much more that Death Proof. Yet, there was nothing really new there. The leg gun on Rose McGowen kicked ass of course, and the zombie death scenes were amazing and hilarious, and I loved the film grain in both movies and the "missing reel" splices where the sex scene and lap dance scene should have been, that was a hoot, but I just wasn't shocked like in Pulp Fiction when Vincent Vega accidentally shoots Marvin in the face, nor was I captivated by any of the dialogue like Mr. Pink's in Reservoir Dogs.
I thought that the fake trailers were pretty funny, but youtube's "Hobo With A Shotgun" was even better than all of Grindhouse's fake trailers put together.
Anyway, maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges, and maybe my expectations were too high, but I just wasn't impressed. I doubt I'll ever watch Grindhouse again.
