But clearly Jack DOES have feelings for Elizabeth--- that was the clincher as far as a Jack/Elizabeth relationship potential being so intriguing to me. If they just acted how they did in 1, then hey yeah, it would be fun to picture them together, but not in a long term way.
but Jack has shown over and over in 2 and what we know of 3 that he actually wants Elizabeth. I really feel like it went beyond respect for him.
And after a bit of research, I would peg Will as the tragic hero. Maybe thats wishful thinking.
the tragic hero fails despite best efforts... no?
i just doubt the audience en masse sees Jack as any sort of tragic figure. So to throw him a tragic-hero resolution would likely confuse, confound, or otherwise bother a lot of people. including me. 😉

The main theme of movie 1 IMO was getting the Pearl back. He accomplished that and at the end I saw a look of triumph. He was back behind the wheel of the Pearl. He was 'Captain' Jack Sparrow again.
I just rewatched the movie and Im telling you. Every encounter, until the end, jack is just being flirtatious and Pirate-like with Liz. You dont see any deep feelings for her in his eyes at any point before the kiss. You see it in Liz at a few points. How can you see love when he is lying to her about Will? How can you see love when he tells her that she has to wear a dress or nothing...and he doesnt have a dress?
because Terry and Ted basically say. Jack wants elizabeth but doesnt want to want her. Something is vexing him and the only thing that can do that to a man is a woman apparently.
Tia says this to him in her hut..its what his compass keeps pointing at..
He's secretly smitten with her...when Will mentions she's in danger he visbly stops dead in his tracks after showing little to no care about Will being in danger.
naw i wouldnt say love even under the best circumstances. these films dont exactly cater to anyone's ideal of love.
i would say a growing attraction and admiration that far surpasses anything he has felt for any woman in some time. T and T made a point to make it plain that Jack had Elizabeth on his mind since the very beginning of 2 (and consequently the end of 1)... as well as clarifying that it was the combination of attraction and infuriation that kept Jack on that path.
I dont see Jack as the sort of man who would prefer some random big-chested whore to a smart, brave, complicated but passionate person like Elizabeth. I dont want Jack to be that man, and I dont think he is. Jack is no meat loaf. He may be a pirate but he's also an aesthetic-- his preferences are shown to be higher than your typical tortuga rat.

I know...but that's what makes him so exciting...I wouldn't say that he is in love with Liz yet....not until the very end..when he hits him on the longboat...I agree, he is playing around with her...but it is because he is intrigued by her, attracted to her...isn't that how love starts...especially for a rogue like Jack..just like in all the historical romances over history....the rogue always treats his lady love like all of his strumpets..but then comes to realize she is more than that...and that's how it is for Jack..I personally, don't want to see Jack sail off with some buxom wench as you say.....
IMO Elizabeth would have just been another woman to Jack had he left her in port Royal and nothing significant had happened between them but she's not..she's one who left him speechless by screwing him over
Johnny in an interview on captain Jack said his favorie moment of Jack Sparrow in movie 1 was when he was on the island with Elizabeth..its the most revealing and telling moment of Jack as a character. He's left speechless by Elizabeth Swann - pretty much Johnny's own words
and actually, having a think about it, i am really of the mind that T and T dont know what they started by linking Liz and Jack.
I think it has to do with internet forums, fandoms, pop-culture icons, and the "rebel/punk" thing that is floating around right now. I had no idea there were so many true, diehard J/L fans until I had a bit of a look around, and polled some old friends and such. to these people, the J/L thing has taken on this age-old question of what love is, what freedom is, why you don't have to do the disney thing in order to get a happily ever after. *shrugs* i dont fully understand it all.
i really do think Jack wants Elizabeth. He's generally a complicated character-- you can never guess what he's thinking--- or he's talking his way out of stuff, but the times i understand him the most/see him for what he really is, are those moments with Elizabeth.
i just have a hard time with Will and Liz not because they arent adorable (because they are), but this is a PIRATE film.
In a princess film, you have certain rules you follow. The lady keeps her hair in good order and wears pretty dresses. True Love is the name of the game.
In a pirate film, the rules are different. Your lady can have bad hair and ugly clothes, your hero can act like a creep sometimes. the relationship rules change too, to fit the pirate culture. True love isnt the name of the game anymore. Its about attraction, passion, adventure.
or it ought to be, IMO.
"How do you create a sense of closure for Dead Man's Chest even though you have more story to tell in the third film?Rossio: The closure comes from a resolution of the thematic argument of the film. While there may be some plot issues still dangling, as long as the film makes a definitive statement in terms of the emotional story of some of the characters, there's a sense of it being complete. Ideally (knock on wood).
Elliott: What's really interesting is -- if there was no sequel after this, if there was no third movie, with the basic emotional moments and what happens at the end of this one -- I would be comfortable having it go out [like this]. We would have resolved the plot of Davy Jones differently, but, in terms of what happens with Jack and Will and Elizabeth and the conclusion of our movie, I feel comfortable that it would work whether you had a sequel coming up or not."
Now does the end of DMC and the ending of DMC just scream to you "Jack learning not to love a woman and sailing off into the sunset his same old self?"
Does it scream W/E strength in a relationship??
NOP 😕
funny how the Will is Hot thread doesn't seem to focus on that at all...LOL....cuz as far as as I can see....if it were..it would only be one post long....the one post made by Surreal 44.....sorry, it's just so hard for me *shrugs* (as surreal44 always does)...I just don't see it....and I definitely agree with Kate about what she said about will's wedding outfit.......and I don't like what was said to Kate....we don't make up stuff....we find it in every line in the movie that was written by Ted and Terry....fate intervenes.....a sinking wedding dress....and how Liz is eager to be married for sex..not Will....a dress or nothing....the thing you want most in this world....the compass pointing to Jack.....I'm so ready to be married (to Will? if so, why doesn't she say that to Jack?)....."there will come a moment when you have the chance to something courageous.....Oh I HAVE FAITH IN YOU.....you're going to want it....you're going to want to know what it tastes like.....I do want to know what it taste like.....Proof is in the chemistry, Proof is in the fact that they have been nominated for best couple by the People's Choice Award....Proof is in the fact that the wedding was not interupted, fate intervened.....it's a curious thing....there was a time when I would have given anything for you to look like that when thinking about me...I don't know what you mean...oh I think you do....don't be absurd I trust him that's all....You don't actually believe him.....How do we find it...( she so believes in and trusts Jack)....and I don't see it as Jack lying to her...he's just protecting everyone..that's how I see it...Will was safer on the Flying Dutchman than he was with Jack on the Pearl....and as for proof.....Jack risks his life to save Elizabeths and everyone elses by coming back to the Pearl when he could have safely made it to land...his honest streak once again was his downfall....Gosh how many times do I have to say all this to the non-believers...you guys always say we have no proof no firm ground for our ship...but I say we have very solid evidences....it's all in the movie, baby...
