Does anyone else think there's a bit of a problem with the categories for drafting? Allow me to explain (and please understand, I appreciate batdude doing this tourney so I'm not questioning his authority...I just see some potential problems and want to fix them).
Let's take Surfer as an example. He's in Category 3 (Overall Power). But isn't he also an "energy" character (round 1)? All he uses is energy pretty much.
I was under the assumption that there would be lots of overlap (like Surfer being able to go in round 1 or 3) but we've run into a ton of problems with characters (not just Surfer).
Surfer and GLs are two that I'd readily point out. We've also run into problems with brawler types who also have another power. But instead of being in rounds 2 or 3, it's just round 3. I'd hesitate to say other names, because this is already revealing more than I wanted.
A big part of me wants to discuss this and be a lot more lenient with the categories (there's almost no one Scoob and I want in round 1 at the moment because of this). Because I understand the strategic element of having different categories, but at the same time I feel like we're limiting the first two categories way too much and lumping too many great choices into round 3.
But at the very least, I'd encourage every team to PM batdude with their potential choices to figure out which categories they are. Otherwise we'll have loads of angry people when you are told you can't draft certain people in a certain round.
....
I'd also ask, since we have our first draft in a few days, that we postpone the draft until this is cleared up. Because 90% of our plans just got upended by our lack of knowledg on these things, and I feel it would be unfair to blindly continue when it's likely that a lot of people are in the dark about this.
it's a fair post, digi, fact is people WILL be able to make cases for characters being in different categories. what will eventually have to be done is a final ruling by bats -- that is he will simply declare a character belongs to a certain category. that will make things difficult on him . . . and will definitely p.o. a lot of participants.

Yep, I knew it would be hard to distinguish between the two at times.First one: Energy manipulators/Magic users means that is their forte, their strong point, their calling card. Or, if that is ALL they can do, they’re put in that category. They can wield and manipulate energy, or magic.
Someone like Blue Superman would be in this category, because he is living energy.
Third one: This is more of a combination of the other two. They can wield and manipulate energy, while at the same time they are top of the line in strength, speed, durability, etc. They can do it ALL, pretty much. Versatility, combined with raw power.
I put GL in the third one, because he can make his body be strong, durable, fast, etc.
I realize it’s going to be hard to distinguish between the two categories at times. However, pm me if you have questions about it. It’s also good to think of back-up characters just in case a character you think is for one category, ends up for a different one.
I understood most of that already (but thanks for re-posting it for cinfirmation), I just figured the categories would be a bit more loose. Even the durability and strength stuff is based on their energy manip (same with GLs, Surfer and others) so I figured that would give them a pass.
I just stand by my assertion that the categories are too limited, and would ask you again to reconsider it somewhat. It inhibits strategy as much as promotes it. Because I honestly can't even think of 1-2 straight-up "brawlers" that are as good as at least 4-5 brawler-types that happen to have something extra that puts them in round 3....and it's pretty much the same (maybe worse) with the energy category.
