ultimately yes, its about not ****ing ourselves, but at the same time, to accomplish that, we must also preserve life, including cute little and fluffy life, which leaves us open to strawman bashing that all we're about is OMG OMG OMG whales are cute.
since mankind lacks the ability to comprehend the intricacies of such balance, its really not our place to determine a type of balance. maybe china would be better off if the panda died off. we dont know that. maybe they even damage their own ecosystem with all the bamboo they consume (of which btw they digest very poorly). so if its up to nature that they die then the hell with them. however it is not the choice of man to be the catalyst for such an extinction.
true balance with nature involves effecting it as little as possible, not trying to create our own version of balance.

No, bullshit. We don't have to preserve every life form there is. Especially not in little zoos, because that does NOT ****ING MATTER to the environment.
Yeah, but the thing is, since we don't know whether it will be better or worse, why can't we just do what we think is better and is certainly better for us at the moment?
We are animals. Animals do affect nature. We are just as natural as anything else. Why do you assume that the current state of nature is how it is intended? What if we are supposed to **** it (assuming there might be a meaning)? Though if we aren't good thing that folks like you are around. I just go by myself and my fondness of my species. Though I can also accept if you are fond of the planet as it is now. We will see what comes (or actually we won't), but either way it is so totally of no matter, so why not relax a bit? If the Panda dies out, boo hoo, whatever. Maybe it will cause us to die out, but the earth will still exist. I mean, it is just a very weird argument. Why do we want to keep it the way it is now? Does that make any sense?

quite a knee jerk reaction. is it hormonal? i clearly stated that we should effect nature as little as possible and allow it to deliver its own verdicts on what is to be extinct. we dont have to preserve anything that is beyond the scope of what we kill/deplete. howwver when we effect an ecosystem to the point where life which would have thrived without us is endangered, yes it is our responsibility. sick of the fluffy animals? then lets talk about most if not all life in our oceans, which seems to be in immediate danger of being wiped out thanks to us. so **** it? **** you!!! i want sushi on my 80th birthday. real sushi, not that tofu crap thats supposed too taste like fish but actually tastes like something that came out my ass.

that is irresponsible. that obtuse rationallity can be used to avoid all accountability and responsibility relating to the environment, and in fact is the norm.

no we are not. thats a ridiculous statement. not even worth addressing.

as i stated, before, perhaps then we should attempt to defy such a dismal destiny...you know....ultimately killing ourselves. leave doomsday destinies to the fundamentalist wackos. i'm of the state of mind that the rapture is not coming and most likely we'll die of starvation rather than be swept up by angels.

again, irresponsible, and can be applied on the grand scale in which it is applied in business and politics. so you're not one of them. doesnt matter since you justify their mindset of complete inaccountability. you enable them.

the earth will exist. eventually nature will reach a new balance without us and 99% of all existing species of life....yeah id bet good money on it (especially since i'd never have to pay up). however what really matters is our own preservation. and if we cant keep from killing an entire species of animals which need nothing more than a secluded ecosystem and some bamboo to survive, then we couldnt conserve our way out of a paper bag...so to speak
How are we not natural dude?
All we make we get from the Earth. We are animals. We are just affecting the eco-system to a greater degree than others.
I said I agree we should preserve it for us until we can affect it in a way that suits us most. But just generally try to affect it as little is possible is stupid too. I like energy. I also like cars. I like Coke in plastic bottles. I like those advantages. And I don't think that it will destroy the eco system for everyone to come. And if it does, well maybe then people are better off not being born in the future anyways.

Yes, because of selfish and irresponsible choices our grandparents made back then and selfish and irresponsible choices we make today and will make in the future. If money could be made by saving the ecosystem of the Panda or any other endangered species for that matter, the same selfish pricks that are destroying it for profit would be preserving it.

Yeah, but maybe we will be hailed in the future for destroying the panda and kicking of the Golden Age of non-panda stuffy stuff which made their lives totally awesome. Pandas are really cute though. We should preserve their DNA. Just to be on the save side.

You're entirely missing what PVS is saying and the BIG picture in general.

Carlin is one of my favorite comedians... But, if George Bush had said this speech, you'd be crying how greedy and selfish Bush is for it.

No, I doubt it. Though Bush is greedy and selfish. I might npot have enjoyed it as much. Just as I wouldn't enjoy Bill Hicks routines as much if Hitler would perform them. But he has a point.

Bush wouldn't be able to say it with the spunk and coherency of Carlin, so no, it wouldn't be as good.
Plus, you know, Carlin is a comedian, Bush is the President of the USA, different expectations.

Okay, explain it to me like I was a 5 year old.
It isn't about saving the Panda because it is a cute looking animal. We as a race need to acknowledge that we effect the world more than any other living thing on the planet and in general, we destroy and throw nature way off balance more than it is designed too do. We have no right to do it though just because we are at the top of the food chain and future generations haven't been born yet.
Would you like it if someone told you owed 500,000 Euros in back taxes from before the time of your birth?

I understood that. As is apparent in my responses.
Actually we have every right. We are here. We don't owe anything to anybody. We could blow the ****ing planet up and it wouldn't be wrong. We just choose to not do it for different reason. Foremost because we like to live. But also because we want our species to continue living. And we want the Planet to be like it is. Cause we like it that way. But it sure as hell isn't our duty to preserve it for our children.
