"I'm sure they do. So, what do you dedicated your existence to? Your purpose and all that jazz."

"It is as you see," says Lo Qi. "I came here to think, and to contemplate, and simply to exist with this life. And so I do."

"By your society, you mean the Machines? You have isolated yourself from them?"

"And that is all you have done here in the Matrix?"

"Yes indeed.

"There was another reason for this choice of time period," says Lo Qi. "It was a narrow window in which it appeared that there would be no more great enemy. After the end of the Cold War, but before the spectre of global terrorism really took hold."

"That's a very Western point of view," says Marduk.

"Yes," says Lo Qi, emphatically. "Absolutely so. The System saw the Western template as being the basis for its world, which is why the Agents who pursue you are all suited caucasians. Representatives of that ideal. It is almost inevitable that those of us outside the mainstream of our society adopt a different cultural background, almost by default."

"It is how we spend our time, indeed. Your question implies there is something lacking."

"I'm simply curious about why you would stay here, I didn't intend to imply anything like that."

"Deserve" is a strange word to apply to the destruction of a Species. Many beleive that it is your former Civilisation that needs to be eradicated." Lifting a huge tattooed arm, and waving it around the group, at the monastary, Barb says. "Anyway, the Wall... This place. It would take great power and influance to build it. Are you resposible for all this around us?"

"I have no desire to go elsewhere.

"But I hope you understand now why it would be inappropriate of me to try and open the door. For a start, I do not think it would be quite in the spirit of my agreement to watch the door to try and open it myself. But more importantly, if the door is opened, it would seem my purpose to the System in being here would come to an end. That would be very awkward for us."

"Maybe," says Lo Qi. "I am open to any possibility that you can provide a reasoned argument for, though I would also advance that the question is academic compared to what can actually be achieved.

"This place was built by our labour alone," says Lo Qi. "Just as we grow our crops and rake the gravel and rock gardens, we constructed these buildings out of materials. But... we have no wall."

"But the door was put there for a reason, and generally the purpose of a door is to be opened at some point...right?"

"What about us? Could we open it?"

"Not necessarily," says Lo Qi, "but do not imagine I have not considered this matter, and there is indeed a great difference between a door and a wall."

"Well, you do have the key, which removes the main barrier. But ownership of the key is ownership of the riddle the door presents. Not can you open it. But should you. Or... will you."

Lo Qi frowns.

"I am afraid those words are unsatisfactory. It is actually very difficult to explain."

"How so?"

"Well..." He looks thoughtful.

"Does it trouble you that you do not know what is behind the door?"

"...well, not exactly."

"Then why do you care about the door at all?"

"Curiosity. When we got the Key, there was a small war going on. We want to know why everyone wanted that Key. Someone has to know what's behind the door, for that many people...well, Exiles...to want the Key."

"So many different groups wanted this key and were willing to fight and kill each other for it. Why wouldn't we want to know what it's protecting?"
