When Nomi attacked Ulic, she did much the same thing. His connection was blocked/suppresed until he redeemed himself. When he saved whats-her-face's life he felt the force for like a second then died and became one with the force.
I don't think that he could have become one with the force if the connection had not come back.
What Nihilus does is both different and on another scale entirely.
