How dependant is a characters power, on fan popularity?

I am under the impression that if a character dosen't have a good reception by comic fans, then their power for the most part, either stays stagnet, or that particular character is written poorly. (ex. Absorbing Man)

Now if a character becomes popular with fans, its seems like they are sometimes powered up to rediculous levels (ex. Wolverine).

Your thoughts?

i agree with that! its all about the benjamins 😂 marketing really if its a good seller they do what they must to keep it a good seller. Not particularly fair to other characters and their fans ie: absorbing man.

They don't always get powered up. Sometimes they just do ridiculous things. I would say... "fairly" dependent.

Yeah, I mean its popularity that sells comics, but its just too bad thats all the comic industry goes on.

The more popular a character, the more appearances they have. The more appearances, the further a writer has to go to make them impressive.

Of course that's a generalisation, but it's what happens most of the time in superhero comics.

so sad, but true

Not always. Take Apocalypse, Cable, and other characters who've been reinvented. Apoc is one of the most popular characters, but he's vastly underutilized and underwritten, with lots of PIS losses.

Or, go the other route. Cable has been written as an 80s era he-man gun toting badass, and people loved him. Now he's turned into this super-powered messiah figure with a jesus complex, and lots of people hate him, myself among them. Or Squirrel Girl, who nobody likes, but owns the likes of Thanos, Dr. Doom, Mandarin, Modok, and of course, Deadpool in a recent issue of Cable&Deadpool.

I agree that some people like Logan get insane hype and power because they are popular. But let's all agree there is some inherent stupidity in Marvel's writing lately.

this Civil War thing could be so much better done, not to mention the lame attempt to link this schtick to Bush's presidency.......

Or Squirrel Girl, who nobody likes

Them's fighting words.

stop using yourself to represent what the majority feel😬

It really depends on the writer, the company, etc.

Sometimes a character is written well simply because they are integral to the story line, even if no one likes them.

Even well loved characters don't get much if they aren't integral to the story.

more often then not, it's just cuz she's comic relief. As I said, it depends on the story, she's there to beat these guys because she's the last one you'd expect to do it, and it's often funny when she does.

Of course it's funny when she beats people. But she is hyper annoying and not a character you'd want as a regular.

And you mean to tell me you LIKE this version of Cable? He's preachy and holier than thou. I liked him better as the crazy gun with the big guns.

What I DON'T like about Cable is when people refer to him as "God-Like"....

He got in like 2 friggin shots on Surfer (that didn't cause any damage) and that makes him God-Like?

I dunno but I thought what they did with Absorbing Man in the Earth/Universe/Paradise X minis was pretty cool and he seemed pretty powerful.

I didn't like Cable in Jesus form but I liked him even less as the standard 80's-90's anti-hero. At least he had some good adventures with Deadpool.

And Apocalypse is popular? Says who? I can't stand him. He's one of the biggest failures of all time. It's bad enough that he hasn't accomplished anything but he's thousands of years old and has Celestial tech for cripes sake.

Come back when you define your powers and do slightly more than Doc Ock, who at least has the excuse of being a pudgy man with robot hentacles.

squirrel girl is there to piss off comic fans who take things like power levels and vs scenarios way to seriously. that's why I love her 🙂
and I'd like to see her as a regular😬

also I'd rather have messiah cable then generic gun guy # 12234214234234

I agree, but IMO Absorbing Man, for the most part, is poorly written.
