I think its way overrated. The plot reminded me of The Last Samurai and other 'Whites vs Natives' movies, where one of the invaders warms up to the locals and betrays his own.

Totally. Dances With Smurfs.

3D Bluray>3D Theater

Watched the film again as an old college buddy randomly texted me and asked me to go.

It wasn't any better the second time around, but I did enjoy the effects much better this time around.

A few things I noticed:

Neytiri (the Na'Vi princess), had a scar on the right side, upper portion of her cheek. Very interesting that they would spend that much time on making the characters look real.

There's a spot in the film when Tsu'tey (the future chieftain) gets pissed and is about to fight Jake Sully and he tenses up his muscles. It looked real as his muscles tensed up UNDER his skin, and you could see it. Very nice attention to detail, there.

The movie takes place between 05-19-2154 and 08-24-2154.

Jake Sully's ID is 256 0ZU 004. He makes over 82 log entries, it shows on the monitor that his supervisor is Augustine, and it shows her ID (which I forgot.)

When Jake Sully is giving his speech to rally up the Na'Vi, he says, "THIS IS!.....THIS IS OUR LAND!" When he paused the first time, I said aloud, "SPAARTA!" The people of the theater lol'd.

I understand, now, why some people are saying that the Na'Vi don't look real and look a tad too cartoony: They saw the movie in a shit theater with a shit projector. That, or they have vision problems. The texture of their skin looks so real, it's freaky. Then, there's the tiny little hairs on their body...that makes it even more freaky. Then, there's the whole "water" effect on the skin when they get wet. Then, there's the misted flesh look when they are getting Jake's Banshee, which was just awesome. Still, there are portions of the body movement that don't look perfectly natural...but it comes close. I was even more amazed at how well the facial features were done. the skin even folds up as they make facial expressions.

There are sooo many cheesy lines it's ridiculous. Here's a list I made:

"I didn't sign up for this." Said a hundred times by a hundred soliders in a hundred movies.

"Go!" Said by Dr. Patel to Jake when Jake said he needed him to stay behind. That moment when he said, "Go!" was just so absurdly unneceesary and it ruined the moment, to me. I rolled my eyes. Why would he say "Go!" when Jake WAS going, but was telling Dr. Patel to stay behind? Why wouldn't he say, "got it!" or "okay" or, "that's a good idea!" It was just horribly cheesy.

"Look at allll the cheddar." Not only is that lame for rich business white dude to say, it's just stupid that people would still be saying it 2154. Seemed out of place and it seemed to try too hard at being "cute" and "hip."

There's a dozen of them from the Colonel as pretty much all of his one liners are recycled cheesy lines.

Here's a few I remember from the Colonel:

"Nothing is over while I'm still breathin'."

"I want to be home before dinner."

"You're not in Kansas, anymore." ZOMG! Really? Kansas still exists in 2154...as does the saying? WEEEEEEE!

And, the whole scene where Parker Selfridge introduces why the RDA is on the planet was so awkward and clunky. It was as if an 11-year old wrote that portion of the dialogue as they couldn't think of a smoother less obvious way to transition the audience to an understanding of a human presence. I guess that's the difference between intelligent writing and shit writing...but most people aren't seeing this movie for it's stellar and well thought-out dialogue, right?

I saw the movie is an average 3D theater (non-IMAX) and it did cause some discomfort in my eyeballs, but that went away about an hour and thirty minutes into the film.

Whether Kansas exists is completely irrelevant, though I don't see why it wouldn't in some form, with them still living on Earth. It's not a huge stretch to imagine someone quoting the Wizard of Ox about 200 years after its release; people might still quote from Shakespeare's plays.

But other than that, your complaints are fairly justified, though I did enjoy the character a lot. It's a James Cameron film, so I assume you didn't go in expecting Shakespearean dialogue...

Finally. I'm going to go see this movie today. 🙂

It's cause the line is used so many times in different movies, and it's cheesy...which was my complaint. The comments that come after the cheesy line are just additional thoughts on the cheesy, over-used line.

You're correct. That's why I said this:

lol, I wasn't trying to get you, dude. I was showing you that I thoroughly agreed with you in a way I absolutely could not deny.

OK. That's even better, then. 👆

Ditto

Even the Star Wars movies did'nt exactly have the best dialogue around but eh it was good enough.

Okay, coo.....hey, wait a minute.... 😆

Avatar was a good movie. I want to watch it again this time without the 3d.

The 3d was good even thought it took about a half hour for my eyes to adjust just right. And I have 20/20 vision. But after that the 3d was good. It wasn’t what I fully expected with how he said it was gonna be but some parts did standout more than others like the hull and labs’ holographic images and the bio-luminosity of the plants and insects.
The CGI was top notch, especially the Na’vi. Facial animations were nearly flawless compared to the real thing but are the best I’ve ever seen in film since Gollum’s facial animations in rotk in ’03. Skin textures were perfect. Na’vi body movements were, for the most part, flexible and fluid. Cameron gets an A for their look. Pandora. Was. Gorgeous. The best looking alien planet (or moon) and forest/jungle, i’ve ever seen in film ever including in real life, my goodness. The view from every single angle looked just extravagant. The floating mountains looked just heavenly. Majestic. And the films’ vivid colors in no way took anything away from the film at all. To sum it up, Avatar’s the most visually arresting sci-fi/fantasy film I’ve ever seen.
Sound was superb. But what made it even better were the seats fitted with termpur-pedic foam that rattled nicely along with every time deep bass boomed in the film. Pandoran wildlife had great sound effects, as well.

I liked the story. And I liked that Cameron didn’t over do it as far as going too far in over-explaining stuff as I thought was gonna happen given how complex the movies’ conceptual science is in the film. As for as the films passion, the movie did conjure up emotions especially anytime that female na’vi cried. Her face and mannerisms looked just so powerfully expressive and meaningful.

Character-wise though, that commander stole the show to me. Damn was he a badass, lol. Especially towards the end. He’s ‘09’s top badass, imo and in my top ten for the last decade and this decade, so far. He was great.

I give this movie an 8.5 outta 10. It was a good movie. A great trendsetter. I have seen sci-fi/fantasy films that I’ve enjoyed more, and I expected a tad more ,specifically with the 3d but, for the most part, the film fulfilled my expectations. And I’m glad to’ve taken part of movie history and the start of what we see in film and how we watch it with regards to cgi. So i’m gonna watch it again but I’m even more exited for what’s to come next technologically speaking.

You sang many more praises about it than I did, but you gave it a lower score. lol.

I think the movie is doing so well because it appeals to a much larger group of people. Sure, they don't think it's the best, but it appears to be universally appealing (for the most part)..meaning, hardly anyone gives it below a 6.

Lets also not forget that ratings out of ten aren't the same just cause they have the same number, as well as generally being pulled out of someone's ass randomly.

That is something. In the end our ratings are our own, though. Like for example here's basically my scale:

1 - atrocious

5 - sorry

7 - alright

8 - good

9 - amazing

10 - perfect

And there were some borderline inappropriate scenes and dialouge for younger audiences, like some of the kids, which were a noticable part of the audience but other than that i could see how this film would be something anyone could really understand. Strife is easily relatable by most people especially nowadays.

You forgot, my scale is the god scale. All scales that are not congruent with that scale are wrong and should be amended to reflect my scale.

I am dead serious.
