The movie was great and it is the most expensive movie made so far. I personally love this movie. Cameron came up with this concept around 15 years ago. At that time the technology was not as of today so he had to wait for the time. Still the story line could have gone more in depth in the beginning.

its not stupid for them to have knives... despite all the guns and missiles we have, a combat knife is still standard equipment. theres something inherently useful about a weapon that is pretty much a one hit kill no matter what armor the enemy is wearing and it never runs out of ammo or jams.
I'm just saying, it was cartoonish (like the rest of the film) for a man in a giant robot suit to pull out a giant knife. It's not creative, like another user said, this movie is set in the far future, they should've been a little less boring/predictable. It's cool if you guys liked that, but for me I think it was an "eye-roll" moment when I saw the villain pull out that knife.
Regardless, that giant knife was the least of Avatar's problems. See: lack of a quality narrative, cardboard characters, unengaging on an emotional level, etc, etc.
Zoe Saldana did a good job with a pretty bland character, Sigourney Weaver did okay as a stereotypical scientist, Stephen Lang? Oh, that's right, Mr. Hyperbolic Over-the-Top Cartoon character? Yeah, I wasn't impressed.
None of the acting struck me as better than average, except maybe Saldana, and even then, the characters themselves were so uninteresting to me that even a fantastic performance (which this film didn't have) wouldn't save it.
