Problem with Countdown is that all the big things we were told about the book (Death of the New Gods, Search for Ray Palmer, etc.) are actually happening in spin off series. Countdown itself doesn't actually feel important. 52 on the other hand, was the most important book running in DC throughout its entire year. You could tell that just by who was writing it. 4 superstar writers on one book gives you the feeling that SOMETHING is going to happen.
Most of the subplots in 52 were completely pointless to the rest of the DCU
(Steel, The Question, Elongated Man).
The only important ones were Black Adam's and Booster Gold's.
