I can tell this is the OTF; both the point and the proof are shite. The difference between the 'hard' in 'trying hard', and the 'hard' that is a synonym of 'difficult' is not that one is a word, one is a phrase. That is about as valid as Stephen Hawking. (Inva...never mind).
One is an adjective, one is an adverb.
The adjective means 'difficult'. It is used to modify nouns: 'This task is hard'.
The adverb means 'to a great extent'. It is used to modify verbs: 'I tried hard to complete this task'. The extent does not imply difficulty; though it also does not exclude it.
Why the **** is there a thread in existence with this name?
"He ran HARD."
Verb-RAN
How did he RUN?
He ran HARD.
scissors
anata wa wakarimasu ka.....
InnerRise; You're not saying anything of relevance.
Saying someone ran "Hard" and tried "Hard" meaning the same thing. Effort, not difficulty.
Should have read what he said before you replied to it.

You're both wrong.
Vinnie: Yes.
Strangelove: Both of us have quite clearly come to the point of knowing what we both meant. Backing down isn't required from either of us.

it's not ignorance, its the truth. i am not saying that all GDF members do it, but it's frequently done there. whenever you have a large group of members debating, it's bound to happen.
The GDF is for debating, RJ. Just because you hang out there and occasionally add a (usually) irrelevant one liner to debates, due to your lack of interest, doesn't mean people who do debate seriously are doing anything wrong.
Don't come in there and start complaining that it's serious, stay here if you don't like it.

serious debating is all well and good, but you cannot deny the fact that once in a while, it becomes a contest of words, to see who can talk the fancier smack.
i am not complaining, i am just making an observation. and i will go where i want here, sir. and i will post what i want here.
Your main critique of the GDF has always been that it's too serious and that we all need to lighten up. It was all you ever posted there for a while.
Of course, post wherever you want, but don't dwell in the GDF and complain that it's serious is my point. If you don't like the seriousness, it would be wise to not go in a serious forum, wouldn't it?

i am a joker. i like to joke. but occasionaly i like to change gears and have a serious conversation. that's when i go to the GDF. i won't lie, every once in a while i joke around there too, but so do many others. are you singling me out as the only member who does this?
No, why would you make that deduction?
My point is, out of all your posts in the GDF, they're mostly one liners. I've not seen you contribute to any serious debate besides marriage and more recently, the relationship one. It's usually you just posting humourously.
That's fine, but my point was to stop viewing it as a place where everybody needs to lighten up. If you want fun and chatty, come here. Although "fun" is subjective.

You made it more complicated for yourself.
Ack, save the vague one-liner. You could've been more elaborate. I'm sure you know it's difficult sometimes to become aware of a vague post over an Internet forum.
I didn't make it more complicated for me. I did prove my point, what point you thought I was on about may have been a different one.
No, no, no. In the beginning, you kept on saying you had proven your point when it came to me using perpetual over continuous to make myself look smarter. You did not, because that was an unsupported assumption and it wasn't true.
How? Especially since me and others had explicitly broken it down for you. You were still trying to tell me I was wrong.
Yeah, AFTER. Then others, like Pittman, tried classifying hard and difficult as basically completely separate, so another argument branched out.
That wasn't what was being discussed. Not sure why it's still going on. Yes, if we were discussing words and not phrases you'd have been right, but we weren't.
You were discussing a PHRASE compared to a WORD. I thought it was WORD to WORD. This is where I made my flaw. Now I realize I made a mistake.
Clever.
Deviate, really.
I didn't believe you, so I asked some more questions. Now I have to take your word for it.
Cool.
Yeah, except I tried to discover if the accusations I made were true. I didn't assume I was 100% definitely right, or I'd not have asked questions. You did, you were wrong.
I never thought I was 100% right, that was the purpose me debating it in the first place. I happened to be wrong, just as your assumption was incorrect about me using one term over the other to flaunt intelligence.
So ask.-AC
No, I now know what you were trying to say because you explained it. It's easy to misinterpret ones post over a forum.

well, i post the way i post. when i see two members battling it out over something silly, neither trying to win the debate, and all they are trying to do is one up each other, i am gonna step in and kid around.
As for me being more "elaborate", it was obvious enough. If you had difficulty still, just ask. I'm not here to cater.
Yeah, I'd proven my point regarding why I thought you were doing it to look smart. It wasn't an unsupported assumption, as we've discovered. It was an assumption supported by the reasons I had to believe what I did. Whether or not it was an accurate assumption is another matter entirely.
I wasn't involved in the hard/difficult debate. I was debating the hard/trying hard. If you're honestly looking for things to reply to, pick things you weren't wrong on.
You specifically told me I was wrong in saying you were trying hard, simply because you thought it was the same definition as the word. I told you what I THOUGHT was right, I didn't tell you that you were wrong.

Why step in and kid around? To lighten the mood, presumably, but for whom? Obviously the mood is fine for the people involved, and if you don't like it, then don't participate in the thread. It's rude to go in and alter the mood simply because you dislike it.
Like walking into a bar where everyone is already smoking and asking them to put their cigarettes out.
