Kirk was born in 2233, he took command of the enterprise when he was 31 (so around 2264), he met Khan in 2267 (ep. Space Seed). So yeah, it would be about three years into the future of this film.

As much as I love Wrath of Khan, I don't think they should revamp it with this new franchise. Also, they'd probably cast Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson or some other shit as Khan, which I would take as a personal insult.

Having said that, KHAN-NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Yes - though Kirk is not the Captain at the beginning, Christopher Pike is. You can see a moment in the trailer, where Pike(Bruce Greenwood) says "Prepare to fire all weapons!" and you can see Kirk working Phasers behind him. This keeps with history - Kirk served as a junior officer on other ships first, working Phasers & Transporters.
I bet the plot of the film has something happening to Pike, and Kirk must take command of the ship.

Pike was seriously crippled, maimed and burned. Oddly enough, with all the technology in the future, the best they could do for him was stick him in a wheeled metal chair with a flashing light from which to communicate through.

Maybe it was a stylistic choice like Geordi's visor in TNG...

A naff, crap choice granted......

Maybe Pike liked "Ironside" reruns or was a fan of Hawking.

Was at Wondercon on Saturday for a bit, got to see and hear JJ Abrams, Quinto and the new Kirk speak for a bit, also saw the new not-released trailer.
