The thing I am trying to get at here is how do you KNOW that this is symbolism. How do you know that this is not an event that will happen exactly as it is described in the bible, and thus would not be symbolism.
How do you know when someone is speaking hyperbole?
You just know when someone is exaggerating and when they are speaking plainly.

Why not instantaneous? I think the 7 day thing was just a literary device.
Why not seven literal days? God has a purpose in everything that He does.

I try to stay out of the religion thing as much as I can because it's like talking to a wall on both ends. I myself take the Bible about as seriously as I would take reading Harry Potter. It's just a book.
But I HAVE read the Bible, and if memory serves me correctly, God supposedly "created" the Sun the moon and the stars on Day 4.
Well how do we tell time? By the Sun and the Moon. So if for 3 days PRIOR to him creating what we use as our 24 hour scale, how do you know it was days?
It could've been YEARS! MILLIONS OF YEARS.

Just look at the context in Geneis 1:5 and in subsequent verses. It is clear that once the sun and moon were created that that is how a day is supposed to be reckoned.
God just reveals this measurement on the first day because it was how He wanted it to be calculated later one.

But, the Egyptians were the ones that subdivided daytime and nighttime into twelve hours eachback in like 2000BC. and The day was subdivided sexagesimally, that is by 1⁄60, by 1⁄60 of that, by 1⁄60 of that, etc., to at least six places after the sexagesimal point by the Babylonians after 300 BC.
So if the concept of time was ACTUALLY not really thought up until around then, how do we know exactly how long it took "God" to "create" Earth.

Another "the bible tells me so", ie circular reasoning.

I agree with KK, what do those sites have to do with the topic?
