Some still do. Brownie points if you get that special Mass. Yet, pay money and get extra prayers to get out of limbo..purgatory..whatever. Hopeully you have some rich relatives to pay your way.
But please stop bombarding us with this ignorance and what really boils down to hate speech.

In fact, Catholics tend to embrace poverty over wealth. Catholics are taught that having massive wealth may be an obstacle when entering Heaven.
Sorry if you like like it, but that is what is done in many Catholic churches. It just is. It is in the Roman Catholic Church.
Indulgences.
That is one of the things Martin Luther was protesting about.
An indulgence is the extra-sacramental remission of the temporal punishment due, in God's justice, to sin that has been forgiven, which remission is granted by the Church in the exercise of the power of the keys, through the application of the superabundant merits of Christ and of the saints, and for some just and reasonable motive.
The Church in granting an indulgence to the living exercises her jurisdiction; over the dead she has no jurisdiction and therefore makes the indulgence available for them by way of suffrage (per modum suffragii), i.e. she petitions..(Masses) God to accept these works of satisfaction and in consideration thereof to mitigate or shorten the sufferings of the souls in Purgatory.
WHO CAN GRANT INDULGENCES
The distribution of the merits contained in the treasury of the Church is an exercise of authority (potestas iurisdictionis)
An essential element in indulgences is the application to one person of the satisfaction performed by others. This transfer is based on three things: the Communion of Saints, the principle of vicarious satisfaction, and the Treasury of the Church.
Special Masses costs money!
Oh, and it's not hate speech at all. I just hated my grandmother believing that she could give money she really didn't have to get my grandfather and cousin out of such a place. It was all a lie.

I know it's a cruel deception, but still...
Catholicism does not embrace wealth, in fact, it almost forbids it. Catholicism teaches that financial wealth is a burden, an obstacle to Heaven, since you cannot worship "mammon" (money) and God at the same time.
Poverty is embraced in Catholicism, to a degree, because the Bible says he meek shall inherit the Earth, and the Poor shall inherit the Kingdom of God. Poverty is a vow of suffering you enact to earn your place in Heaven, and show that you only want and need God.
That is why Catholic nuns and priests take a vow of poverty.
It's a teaching I am personally disgusted by. Buddhism teaches that Poverty is the cause of all crimes. And I beleive that is true.
Poverty is a horrible thing. It's an evil phenomena. No one should suffer that way, it's a terrible waste, and will only cause misery. Probably an excuse from the Church to keep others low in power.
