All that says is that there was an original idea, called Heart of Darkness.
GL took the concept and fit it to the Vietnam War era, which was later scripted by somebody else, and directed by Francis as the film Apacalypse Now.(just as he took the older concept of Hidden Fortress by Kuirowsawa and made it into the original Star Wars.)
This is in several GL biographies, and corroborated by FFC.
I digress, but the point was that your and Exanda's (and mine) beloved film started off as a movie that GL concieved and was going to make.

Heart of Darkness is a great book, Joseph's Conrad's novel reads like a monologue in itself; the only difference is the exposition of Africa to Vietnam and Kurtz into an American general. Lucas may have had a hand in its conception, but its the execution which really makes AN stand out.
Lucas having a hand in what I like to believe as the benchmark for a flawless film, means little to nothing. No ones disputing that he was a talented and capable writer and director, but he evidently lost his flair with the PT.

Apocalypse Now may have been somewhat the same even with Lucas... Francis gave Lucas one choice.. either continue with Apocalypse Now and abandon Star Wars... or vice versa. Lucas choose Star Wars. Which, I'm glad he didn't abandon, because A New Hope revolutionized my imagination at seven years old. And for that I will be most greatful to George for the rest of my life.
