The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the first movie I ever saw that really scared the crap out of me (considering how long ago that was). And also considering the fact that a friend and I watched it at the drive-in, and as the credits were rolling, a big guy in a mask with a chainsaw was walking around to all the cars, revving his chainsaw up in people's faces. My friend put her car in reverse and took off out of there so fast that she ripped the speaker box off the pole. It was still dangling from her car window as we hit the highway and sped towards home!!!......Jaws came out when I lived in Hawaii, and needless to say, I DID NOT go into the ocean the whole two years I lived there. That was the kind of effect Jaws had on me!!!
As an adult nothing has outright terrified me. IT was the only film (albeit, as previously mentioned, a mini-series) that scared me as a child. I grew up watching horror movies, and became desensitized to gore. Now that I'm 22 and have a grasp of things like psychological terror and subtle frights, I'd say the following movies I would say gave me an itch:
Signs, The Mothman Prophecies, The Ring, and The Grudge.
As for my vote for scariest film of all time, all things considered it's a tie between The Shining (Kubrick) and Nosferatu the Vampyre (Herzog).
Army of Darkness by far
😆
In all seriousness,
The Exorcist affected me most as a child.
Since then, the only movie in my adult life that has somewhat affected me was the New War of Worlds movie. It's not so much the aliens, but the fact that I'm struggling to protect my family. Family means a lot to me...and I'd never want to face a situation like that.
Well, for me, it's about what doesn't scare me, because most horror films do... However, I do kinda set myself up to be scared, because I'm always so curious... The only ones that don't are the Halloween and Friday the 13th series', because their essentially about serial killers, and I hear about that kind of stuff all the time...
But... if I had to choose one, I'd say Nightmare on Elm's Street, because when I was little, I didn't fall asleep the night I saw it...

The Last Horror Movie...now THAT was scary!I was trippin hard on the last 5 mins.
Tho I think the movie (especially the ending) would have been more effective if the movie was called "Your Last Horror Movie".
Yeah, I was wondering if Max was going to go knocking on my door. I'd probably die happy though, trying to make out with him while he's killing me.
I was 6 when I saw Alien, and to this ****ing day I can't sleep in the dark.
Honorable mentions to The Hills Have Eyes remake, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake (with the hotness that is Jessica Biel) and it's sequel. Two of the most disturbed but not necessarily scary films I've seen are Requiem for a Dream and Bad Boy Bubby.

The Shining gets my vote. first time i watched it as a kid, i was really freaked out.
Agreed. However, it probably never would have been that scary if it weren't for that brillaint performance by Jack Nocholson 😉 .
Also, the original version of "The Omen," the original version of "The Exorcist," and the first "Children of the Corn" movie, were all pretty damn scary. I couldn't sleep properly for weeks after seeing each one of those films 😕 .
