"Yes, you have named both. Firstly, so many could not be unnoticed. And secondly, it is physically impossible- Exiles still consume power! And the entire point, the drive behind this System of purpose, is entirely releated to Machines having to have need because the power available is limited. Not only is it impossible for things to be that ay, they would be llogically ridiculous.

"Not that things would be that way anyway. One would assume in such a society that termination would be better enforced. A significant amount of Machine society would be dedicated to hunting and killing unneeded Machines. A state of affairs which leads us to the second reason why this idea of Machione society is wrong. The fitst, as I said, is purely practical. Now we look at the second, the reason all this is not so, based on what we have discussed so far."

"The machines don't want to kill each other?"

"Issue of morality, right? Many Machines would agree with me that eliminating someone for the reason that other being would do his work more effectively is wrong?"

"Absolute;y. The society that some of you mentiomned at first, the one where Machinea are forced to self-terminate in order to make room for their replacements... well. That is a very efficient society. Very effective. it is the society Sennacherib would want."

"So instead, Machine society is more simiilar to the society of humans, and older Machines are allowed to exist? Does it mean that most Exiles are actually criminals, if they were forced to leave the society?"

"The closest equivalent of criminals, yes. But hoew could other Machines be allowed to exist? There isn't enough power, that's the entire point. And what would they do, anyway?"

"So what is the solution? Perhaps old Machines can be reprogrammed into new models?"

"Retooling, updating, improvements, these can all be done. But there comes a point where the only logical way forward is a re-design from base principles, which involves a new Machine."

"So what can be done? Putting them in some kind of "sleep" that would allow them to exist without using so much resources? Creating finite lifespan for Machines? I don`t see any obvious solution. Perhaps I would be able to find one if I had centuries to think about such issues. Unfortunately my time is ending right now." -He finishes bitterly, feeling the disease proceeding to kill him.

"A luxury I have had. But as for the solution, the reponse to your question there is very simple."

"So we need solution that allows Machines to exist when their original purpose has ended....allow them to find new purpose?"

"It would seem the obvious conclusion."

"Such a thing is far from simple."

"So where is the simple solution? Machines don`t want their existence to end, but it creates difficulties... perhaps Machine Society has not so much problems with energy nowadays and those "old" Machines can still be useful in some way?"

"Sorry, your question there mis-represents what I said."

"You mentioned 2 issues- limited amount of resources, and the lack of purpose for those Machines. I am trying to think about ways to solve those issues."

"No, your first question of what you just said."

"You didn`t say that the solution is simple?"

"Indeed I did not. I said there was a simple response to the question of the solution."

"There is no solution?"
