"It depends what you mean by 'should'," says Lo Qi. "Basically, they are not being replaced at all, except when it is absolutley necessary. Better programmes are written to replace only those that have become an active disruption."

"So is machine society stagnating?"

"Machine society has not signifcantly advanced since the formation of the Matrix. Technologically, even culturally- there are no significant advancments, no new ideas."

Melkor was here.

"Wasn`t it part of your purpose to find solution to this problem?"

"Absolutely, yes."

"Since you are Exile, perhaps your solution was rejected?"

(Ha! Melkor, was that your girlfriend's account? You just pulled a Crewlifornia thing 😛 )

Heph coughs a little.

"What have you concluded should be done, then?" Heph says, beginning to understand the reason the Virus was unleashed but not wanting to outright say it.

"Not exactly. They did not like some of the conclusions I was reaching My presence here is as much to stop me spreading my thoughts as it is anything else. Nonetheless, although I was the first 'Exile' as it were, I am not like the others. The System still considers me part of their organisation. I was never replaced, and I have continued to work on the problem."

"Is releasing the Virus part of your work in finding the solution?"

"In a sense. But in another, my purpose is grander than that."

"Is your purpose to figure out how to make humans and machines coexist?"

"I think you're trying to get the Machine society out of the stagnation it is currently in. The Virus will kill all humans, and therefore Machines will lose power. Once all the inferior Machines have died of the power shortage and an alternative has been found, Machine society will be able to progress forward. Right?"

"'Inferior' is a term I will object to. There is also a lot more to it than that. Perhaps we should turn to my motivations."

"Unless there was something else you wished to address, then by all means."

"Unless there is something else you wish to address, then by all means."

(Woo! Double post!)

"Interesting that you accused the humans who scorched the sky of immorality, I think. Still, why are you doing this?"

"I did no such thing, though it is not an act I think was replete with morality. I merely pointed out that if you are making accusations of evil and genocide, the Humans were the first to try and destroy an entire race in that war. A mass and totally indiscriminate slaughter.

"Now. One of the sources of my... disagreement of the System is exactly what I believe I am for. They thought my purpose was to map out a plan for future Machine society, but it was not long before I saw my purpose as grander than that.

"The other propblem was in identifying the existence of a 'Telos' at all, whatever it may be. Why are we here, or does what we do matter? It was very difficult to proceed without some meaningful answer to these basic worries. What point of mapping out a future, if the future has no point?"

"Even if the future had no point, it would be nice to improve it."

"Why? Improve it for what purpose? The extension of that logic is to think like Sennacherib. With no point, things like morality are simply irrationality. No, my purpose presupposes an actual reason for improving anything. 'Nice' is meaningless."
