What covers do you think are MUCH better than the original?

The song 'I Started A Joke' by The Beegees sounds TERRIBLE. It sounds like the guy is getting castrated while singing, it sounds SO bad.

The cover by The Wallflowers was BRILLIANT. I loved it, it was perfect, it was sad, it was catchy, and it was fantastic to listen to.

I prefer Social D's 'Ring of Fire' over the original, though I wouldnt say its "better"

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, originally by Leonard Cohen.

All Along the Watchtower by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, originally by Bob Dylan.

Those two more or less made those songs their own.

No Quarter by Tool, originally by Led Zeppelin.

I know someone's going to feel obligated to say Hurt by Johnny Cash, originally by NIN.

"Sway" by Michael Buble (originally by Dean Martin)

Hurt (NIN) by Johnny Cash 🙂

All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) by Jimi Hendrix - as previously mentioned, this is the definitive version of the song.

Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) by Jeff Buckley is better than the original, but I like the Rufus Wainwright version the best.

Turn the Page (Bob Seger) by Metallica - actually I'm kinda even on this one, they are equally good imo.

Crossroads (Robert Johnson) by Cream.

Cocaine (J.J. Cale) by Eric Clapton.

Hush (Joe South) by Deep Purple.

Mad World (Tears For Fears) by Gary Jules - shoulda seen that one coming.

Respect (Otis Redding) by Aretha Franklin - this is the definitive version of the song.

Statesboro Blues (Blind Willie McTell) by the Allman Brothers Band.

Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran) - Alan Jackson.

Oh yeah! I cant believe I forgot that one!

Talk about someone making another's song their own. Many people dont even know Aretha wasn't the original.

Can I just ask anyone who will name it, or Nell who has, why the Johnny Cash version of Hurt is so loved?

Is it because he's dead? Or you feel an obligation to Johnny Cash? If you do just like the song, fair enough, but to me personally it sounds like a zombie getting bed-bathed.

I can't speak for them, but for me it's just that it seemed like a perfect match. I can't really explain it. I wouldn't say it's better than the original though, they are on an even playing field.

The thing that boggles my mind is that, technically, they aren't that different at all, and it's not like Cash was in his hey day.

It seems like a bulk of the preference comes from the fact that it's Cash.

I think THAT is the precise reason why people like his version.

He sounds like a zombie getting bed-bathed, which (to me anyway), makes the song sound a whole lot sadder. He sounds like he's in pain and I guess the fact that there's a strong sense of that emotion might be why some prefer it.

I don't know. That's just one thought. 😉

I'm a long time Johnny Cash fan. I don't really like NIN, and I really like the opening on the acoustic.

Did he change more than one word in that song? I know he says "Thorns" instead of "Shit".

I think so, I'd have to check though, which I don't feel like doing. Besides that, I don't consider it part of why it's better which is why I edited my post.

I consider it the best song ever sung by a woman and it is definitely my favourite soul song.

I personally can't get into Cash's Version. Yea he sounds painful, but it's also painful to listen to. I even like some of his older stuff too.

All You Need Is Cash by The Rutles

I don't think you have taste in music anymore.

I tried not to like the Johnny Cash version over the NIN version, but it's just so much better.

W-why would you try not to like it?

Also, how?

I have every taste...in music.

I just choose to listen to more than one bands back catalogue repeatedly, you malcontent.

I should thwack you in the knee, elbow in the face.
