Silver Surfer Requiem

interesting story, very well written. must be non-cannon. it's impossible for the Silver Surfer to be 'dying'. he's gone on for years (thousands of years?) as the Silver Surfer, the 'outer coating' never affected him then, so why now?

anyway, great story, vastly more adult dialogue than the usual philosophical jabberings that issue forth from him all too often.

Cars don't break down until they do either.

Just because something hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it can't happen.

The simplest answer to this would be that different writers have different interpretations of what they believe SS' makeup is. Some have written him as flesh and blood beneath, but have have written that his skin is merely a shell. In any case, in this we simply have to assume that JMS went with the flesh and blood version, something that makes vague sense seeing how SS was created in his creation appearance.

Anyway, no matter which way he chose to do it, there would be believers of the other version questioning that call. This is one of the classiest comics I have read in a long time. Both issues one and two hit the nail on the head for characterisation. The F4 and Spiderman were played to perfection, and SS is written as he always should be-- philosophical, pacifist and basically space Jesus. The dialogue may seem self-absorbed at times, but it has certain great lines. Spiderman's thought train towards the end: "How sad that his voice was heard so little, when he had so much to say" epitomised the series thus far, and its portrayal of SS.

Great read thus far. I only hope they don't screw up the final ending, seeing if this is in continuity, SS survives.

Great post

I want to say that when he channelled the energies of the crunch "energies that even Galactus cannot control" it took an extreme toll on him. If the source of what is killing him is more powerful than his creator then yea its possible for him to be dieing. I think its actually really cool, and hope they explain soon why he is dieing. Both issues have been great especially the last one. Hopefully the rest are just as good if not better.

no denying that. but at the same time, this is Silver Surfer, ex-Herald of Galactus. once Heavy G makes something, it doesn't need an M-O-Ting ever again.

also, Surfer's been 'killed' or completely destroyed more than a few times (by Thanos, unilord...), his body doesn't decay or degrade it just returns to its pristine state, again.

the one exception was when T&A unloaded on him, but at that time, he also channeled the "big crunch" so maybe it was serious overload that made it possible for his body to decay and die (until Galactus just remade him).

also Surfer has the ability to heal things, bring back life to planets, wounded/dying comrades ... it just doesn't jibe that he'd have this kind of Power Cosmic Cancer. still, good story.

this is quite obviously out of continuity, given that he's "ex-herald of Galactus", given that the FF aren't talking about WW Hulk etc etc ...

but it's pretty good, though I don't really go in for the artwork here. I prefet the style that WWH is done in.

Maybe its set a little further into the future after all these events have passed. Who knows, its just a thought i had.

Good point.

I both like and dislike the art here. It's not very "cartoony" or comic book-like if you want, but it looks VERY realistic. I mean, just check out Reed. They've done an awesome job depicting him, even though he looks a tad old.

This could be another "the end" comic.

It many not be out of continuity. It may simply be at a displaced time. For example, in the past, after he had left G and before events of Annihilation. It could be in the future, which explains why Spiderman never saw him again. Say about 5 years after Annihilation and he leaves G again. it's possible. I'm just saying it could be at a different time.

Loot:

If he was written as being flesh and blood beneath, it may be that this shell allows him to harness cosmic energy for sustenance, while beneath it all he is still human.

Well done JMS you have successfully copied the All star superman story. I'm sure Morisson is very proud.

man, I completely forgot Morisson invented using the death of a character as the plot's main point. I mean, I've admired Morisson since Doom Patrol, but seriously, that's a brilliant invention. Because no one, no one ever, has made the death of a character the premise of a series.

That was a marketing ploy created to garner sales over Marvel and had a pretty shitty resolution.

I thought it started out GREAT, but took a nose dive after the Strange confrontation.

The line Strange said about Surfer and the quality of soul was great.

what does he say
