He didn't die in the alternative ending...Maybe they'll go with that.
Except the ending that was shown in the theatres is canon. They can't disregard it. He's dead, so they can only go the prequel route if they want Will Smith.
This may have been the first of the three movie adaptations to use the original title - after The Last Man On Earth and The Omega Man - but like the others it doesn't have the conviction to follow Richard Matheson's story to it's full end. Namely, that the virus mutates, society finally stabilizes and adapts, and Robert Neville becomes the odd man out. The monster of legend who's been killing vampires during the day and retreating to a hiding place; that's what he becomes. Hence the meaning behind the title (and also the last words written in the novel): I Am Legend.
The death might've been canon on the big screen but the dvd offers both endings & most people would remember the movie from multiple viewings at home than at the theatre.
I always prefer the ending where he lives as this version portrays the vampires as more intelligent & motive for saving their own kind & also remembering that they were once human beings too.

Any recommendations?
Compete in the Special Olympics? Unless of course you are handicapped, then it would just be a fair competition.

Yeah, I prefer the alternate ending, too. It's slightly closer to the book... ever-so slightly. I mean, why not just make a closer adaptation of the book?? I don't get why Hollywood can't do that. 😬
As a very, very big fan of Richard Matheson and his works, I can say with confidence that I am Legend was pretty f*cking disappointing.
I understand that the filmmakers had to cut a few corners to make such a dystopian, one man film and the like. The first two acts of the film were actually not bad at all, especially the tear jerker scene with the dog, Sam.
What pissed me off was how the ending was completely changed. COMPLETELY. Even the "controversial" alternate ending was bad. The theatrical ending secured Robert's status as "legend", but the novella was just so much more emotional and intense.

They could have easily captured the book while setting it in modern times, imo.
Neville not being your average Joe dealing with an impossible situation was the biggest fail in making a film adaptation.
They opted for an action-thriller. Instead of a horror-esque drama.

You're upset again; all cos of some movies. Damn.
What makes you think I'm upset, brah? Just trying to offer some advise... that you asked for. 😐

Yeah, with the right director, a horror/drama could be awesome if they stuck closer to the book.

Yeah, the dog scene was excellent. At least that was kind of true to the novel.

The Alien franchise disagrees. The Star Trek franchise disagrees.

Actually scrub that...given that First Class was touted as a prequel rather than a reboot says it all about the continuity and how it doesn't really matter about what has been made in a series that supposedly establishes canon. A writer can write and a director can make something either fit or not fit. My only issue is when it is poorly done.
With I am Legend they might make it a prequel. I'd like a story about the beginnings of the epidemic that we see in the flash backs from the 1st movie and how it took hold.
It might focus on someone else entirely and not Robert Neville.
It probably won't be good...but I think we've learned that lesson with plenty other extensions to established, previously written work that the original author has nothing to do with.
On a related note I'd like to see a film based on a similar story...Have you ever read "48" by James Herbert?

The wiki page makes it sound really cheesy but it's pretty decent...Especially the bits about the London Underground.
