They wanted the cool fun factor instead of a great story.
Yeah, but they still failed at delivering that. I don't think anyone who went to see this movie expected anything more than a fun ride. The original set out to do the same and it succeeded. I'm not trying to compare the two movies because even though their the same stories it's impossible to compare the two when the budget is considered. If we were to compare the two, however, The 2010 version is a pitiful failure.
It doesn't require an intriguing story to deliver a fun, intense action movie but it does require, either good writing or great directing. Suspense isn't created with, simply, great CGI and cool scenarios. It takes good writing. There was no suspense built up for the action scenes or the moments of consequence. It felt like everyone involved was simply going through the motions on this one. It's really a shame too, because had this movie lived up to its potential we could have seen more, Medieval fantasy type movies. We don't see many of those anymore.
I liked it, I wasn't expecting deep character development or anything, it's not a movie that requires deep character development, it requires a few badasses against all odds, and as far as I'm concerned it delivered just that, and improved upon the old story, Hades was way more badass than Hera. And Liam Neeson was epic as usual
The same movie review show that i mentioned in the Kick-ASS thread review this
Said something about the battle's
DAVID: But doesn't it help if you can actually see what's - I mean, in some of the fights, you can't actually tell who is being threatened by this creature, because the choreography is so poor.MARGARET: I think with young people and video games these days...
It was an okay movie all day way up to the Kraken. They screwed up the ending. They rushed starting where the Kraken awakened. They should have put the human to attack the Kraken with Catapult, Archers, and even Balistas. Hades was a disappointment as well.
However, I did enjoy the movie because I left my house with my friends who all had low expectations of the movie.

It too did'nt do shit in the old one also besides attack the city like this new one.
Difference is, the original's story and cheese-factor is what kept you watching, not the claymation.
This one didn't have either of those aspects, so it would have been nice if the one kick-ass thing of the film lasted for more than a couple minutes.
Be nice if there's an extended version that shows a good 10-20 minute fight between the Titans of old and the Kraken.
