Also, Rathian shouldn't be timing you out. Use the S&S or the Long Sword for good results (although it's really just up to your tastes)
Make sure you aren't using an element that the monster is resistant to as well.

Use Dragon element if you have it. You can check a monsters resistances by going to the smithy and looking at a piece of that monsters armor. Whatever the armor is weak to is what the monster is weak to.
