When I checked this game out, the kid behind the counter felt the need to tell me that Final Fantasy 7 is a classic and his favorite game ever.

Because it was so incredibly linear there was little worthwhile to do short of the main story?

Of course it had the best visuals, it was on a superior system. ๐Ÿ˜

Tactics is best Final Fantasy though.

To me that wasn't a bad thing though. The non linearity in previous Final Fantasies was more tedious than anything else imo. Final Fantasy XIII focuses on its main selling points for the majority of the game: its battle system and cutscenes, which to me is a good thing, with the character customisation, encyclopedia, and later non linear game world to add variety for those who needed it. But to me the battle system and main storyline were that good, and easily the greatest strengths the game possesses, that that was all it needed to focus on. It didn't need to take the player on ridiculous tangents away from the main direction of the game.

Tactics has the second best storyline, and a different style of gameplay that's arguably more enjoyable, but I think the dated graphics prevents it from being as complete an excellent game like XIII is.

Well you didn't even cry like a baby during the sad scenes in Elfen Lied so that's all that needs to be said there.

But in all seriousness, it has the finest visuals in a game to date, the best menu based RPG battle system ever, coupled with amazing music and an amazing storyline. The only other game I can really think of that excels so well in every catagory is Metal Gear Solid 4.

I wouldn't say it was even slighty of the magical girl genre, twist on it or otherwise. One question, did you guys read the manga or watch the anime? I watched the anime and to me, Elfen Lied was effectively tragic due collectively to the dark tone and atmosphere, the manner in which the characters were developed, the moving music, and the sad themes at play. I've seen people say it lacked subtlety and whatnot but I don't think it did to the point that it became overwrought or anything and if anything I'd say subtlety can be overrated.
I read the manga and watched the anime, it was simply a gore filled story with a sad love story going on.

And XIII is objectively the best Final Fantasy ever.

VII's my personal favorite main entry to the series. If you plan on playing any of the others after XIII I'd recommend completely skipping I-V. I don't even know how it had been a popular and successful series up until that point as the games were absolute garbage imo. They only became big on storytelling with IV, and the stories only started to be good with VI.

But my overall favorites period are Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics. They both tell two of the finest videogame stories you can come across and are just plain awesome.

I read the manga and watched the anime. In both of their entireties. I could not take it seriously.

Objectively huh? I am not sure you know what that word means.

The Megami Tensei series is great but I think the Final Fantasy series just about beats it.

Final Fantasy has never done anything as awesome as this.

I'm almost convinced I'm going to not like this game. I doubt I'll play any others. The fact that I'm even giving this a shot is only just short of a miracle. As anyone here would tell you, I have bad taste. They're all full of shit, of course, but that's what they'll tell you.

And I decided when I finished Assassin's Creed 2 that the title of best storyline ever in my eyes goes to that series.

Well, your taste isn't the best.

However, FFXIII is very different from the other FFs, so don't judge the series based on an outlier.

AC2 does have one of the best storylines in a game ever, though.

Are FF story lines actually any good? I haven't heard about all of them, but with what I've heard about some of the major ones that people seem to love, none of it has ever sounded particularly compelling.

I don't know why as I haven't played it or anything but I really just can't imagine Assassin's Creed as having that great of a storyline. I'll play it myself to be sure but from what I was reading in the character thread the story sounds pretty generic in all honesty.

I love it's story for all of the little bonus marks to the history of the world that you find by solving all the glyphs. They're cool.

Fixed that for you ๐Ÿ˜›

Very little of the plot was covered in the character thread.

That doesn't even come close to all of the little shoutouts to actual history.

Go wiki some of the characters from AC2/Brotherhood. Any of them. Pretty much everyone except Ezio is an actual historical person, with the events of the games slotting very nicely into what actually did happen.

As a series (from VI - XIII, with Tactics and Vagrant Story) it's one of the best. Vagrant Story is overall the most effective story and essentially one huge psychological mind **** the entire way through if you're into that sort of thing. Final Fantasy Tactics has one of the most effective political stories in a videogame to date and XII is similar in that regard, though certainly to a far lesser extent. VI has absoltuely amazing character devlopment and some of the best thematic content you can find in an RPG. VIII and X are heavily romance themed, and the latter has a very cool plot twist on par with the likes seen in the Sixth Sense and Fight Club. VII puts a twist on the amnesia tale and possesses one of the saddest videogame moments in videogame history. XIII has a hugely detailed setting, great pacing and the highest quality cinematic value of the series. IX is awesome though it's hard to really label exactly why. They're all great imo, though you might as well check out Xenogears and Chrono Cross as well, two other Square games, and both of massive quality. I think they were both at one point in their development planned to be future entries in the Final Fantasy series as well, though they were later chosen not to be (well Trigger rather than Cross; Cross is the sequel).
