I don't necessarily think that super-close friendship always has to rule out any sort of romantic/sexual relationship. There's always been some sexual tension between my best (female) friend and I basically as long as we've known each other (the sentence "why didn't we hook up in high school when we were both single?" has been said before). And GK and I were kind of super-close friends before we started dating.

I think this is kind of a more common thing in same-sex-pairings, too. mmm Similar gender roles imprinted on them growing up might cause this, who knows?
Also, let's not forget Rarity and Fluttershy bathe together and Rarity even dressed her behind a curtain in Green Isn't Your Colour.

Well, I also think that relationships should be firmly rooted in a strong friendship first, anyway. So yeah 😛
