Garriott had the life-long dream of going into space, and did a bunch of cool stuff while he was up there. But while he was in space NCSoft (the guys publishing GW2) took the opportunity to forge his signature on a number of documents. They then used those forged documents to go and sell all of his stock in the company off and announce that he's "resigning" from a controlling role in the company, effectively retiring as a result.13 days afterwards they announced that they would be shutting down Tabula Rasa btw and blamed it on him. Garriott was the Executive Producer for Tabula Rasa. Remember that MMO? It seems that's why it was shut down.
This isn't just supposition, Garriott took them to court and won a 28 million dollar lawsuit. Its just.... thats something you'd see in a freaking movie. They forge documents while a man's in space to force him out of the company and shut down his game. Its bizarre. They're practically Saturday morning cartoon villains.
They've also tried to sue TERA just because TERA was stealing their Lineage subs. They admitted that's why they tried to sue them. They were terrified of it dominating the market over here. So instead of releasing a competing product, they decided it would be easier to sue the crap out of the company and try to tie the release of the game up in the courts until the developing/translating company ran out of money.
It didn't work though, the TERA developers had a statement by one of NCSoft's attorneys/representatives plastered on their front page, saying the only reason they were suing them was because they were trying to bully the competition to death. So yeah fail.
Hell, from that and Garriott suing the pants off them they really are
saturday morning cartoon villains!
Undeniable proof that not only are people who play GW2 losers, but they're amoral.
Whats funny was the document they used was supposedly from Garriott in quarantine after his trip to space saying that his time up there had convinced him to pursue other interests. Despite that one of the reasons he went into space was to promote Tabula Rasa.
Edit: Fuuuuuuck, stop talking about that Nemebro! D:

Also, my friend is getting married tomorrow. His fiance gave us the key to his apartment and Matt and I are breaking in with beer tonight. haermm
Beer? What a waste of volume and money. 😠 Drink Vodka: Absolut Vodka. Don't mix with sugary drinks and use just lime slices to chase.
You'll save money, avoid the hangover, avoid dehydration, and get drunk faster.
Other than that, party on. I am jealous...nothing to do this weekend.

Not to take NCsoft's side here, but that description is a tad disingenuous. The thing about the forged letter is entirely an unproven allegation on Garriott's part that has never been proven. The ONLY thing under debate is whether Garriott was fired or resigned. This was relevant because they said it was the latter, which by contract meant he had to sell his shares at once, whilst the market was low. Garriott claimed he was in fact fired and should have been allowed to sell his shares whenever he wanted.
He sold his own stock- albeit under pressure he later got compensated for. No-one forged his signature to sell his stock fraudulently! It was just a boring legal argument over a contractual point.
Well I'm not feeling particularly ingenuous to NCSoft. estahuh
And I'm inclined to believe Garriott. It makes no sense to resign and then immediately do a 180 and claim the letter was forged. Nor does it make sense to claim going into space made him consider new opportunities when the trip was a publicity stunt in the first place.
If they forged his resignation to make it look like he quit himself, then they pretty much did fraudulently sell his stock.
Well a cynic might say that Garriott realised he'd sold out at the bottom of the market and could get his money back by claiming forgery.
But in the end, the case didn't come down to that point, and NCSoft generally acts like a corporate ass anyway*, so whether the letter was forged or not it's reasonable to believe Garriott was wronged.
*indeed, they barely defended the case, which is why their application for appeal was rejected.
