If he'd focused instead on developing the conflict between benders and non-benders the story would have been much better. The romance sub-plot in TLA was infinitely better because it was minimalistic and non-intrusive. It's such a shame that the cartoon with a kick-ass female protag is the one where they had to ramp up the womance. Because women.

Also that bit where even Amon slobbers all over Mako's cock was maddening. They really thought we'd be all over that guy.

You should check out SFDebris' Korra review. He really breaks down why Mako doesn't work as a character.
