Learning Dificulties (also known as Mental Retardation)

I'd just like to ask why all the Americans on this forum use 'Retarded' as an insult. People with Learning Dificulties did not choose this, why make fun of them? It's pretty disgusting, I think.

Basically, I'd like to ask if you actually hate or have a problem with people who have a Learning Dificulty.

Learning disabilities are not known as mental retardation

there are certain disabilities one might experience in learning if someone does have mental retardation, however, they are different terms

No, in Britain LD is the PC name for MR. Trust me I'm from the UK.

You fucking biggot. You're the one who's linking the words to disabled people. Retard just means slow. Nowhere in the definition does it even mention disabled people.

Like a fire retardant materials resist flames so slow the burning process.

You're the one who's disgusting with your tying the disabled to the term.

Hypocritical biggot. 😠

go pick up a copy of the DSM IV, oh wait, you would already have read it since you know what you are talking about

Damnit not you again.

LISTEN; I am telling what the equivelent of 'Retardaton' is in the UK. I actually got it wrong; the phrase is 'Learning Difficulties', so you are sort of right. It is not a disabilty. Stop calling me a bigot (only one 't', moron), because a bigot is someone who discriminates because of what somebody is. Getting a word wrong is not a viable excuse for calling somebody a bigot.

Creshosk is living in retard nirvana.

Please don't bring the tone down, I'm just solving a problem between me and Chreshok, in which he was actually right.

Since I live in the UK neither site means anything to me because they mean diferent things in diferent countries.

so your question is why is the word "retard" used as an insult?

I would think that is self explanatory....

Are there any terms used when describing a retard regarded as politically correct? I know someone who owns a couple retard ranches (group homes) who referrers to them as "consumers".

Not really. It's like using 'black' as an insult. It's derogatory, and is poking fun and cruelty at somebody for being what they were born as. 'Moron' is suffice enough, why not just call them that, instead of using cruelty to put someone down?

no, the nature of the term means that it will be used as an insult. It describes something that is negative.

look up "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" on wikipedia

while socially unacceptable, mental retardation is a psychiatric and medical term

Basically, I don't want to have an arguement with you inimalist because I respect you for being pretty open-minded, I just want to know why Americans put down people with a MR.

but you are arguing with me, about something that I know for a fact :/

and the answer to your question is obvious. Retards are dumb, thus it becomes an insult, and it works because people are afraid of being retarded and thus get offended.

'Retards' are not dumb or stupid, they just do not have the capacity to learn as much as somebody without a MR. It wasn't their choice. Nevertheless, I know somebody who would be called a 'retard' who is very good at Maths, but not capable of much else.

Also, I'm not offended when I'm called a retard, because it's not something to be ashamed of if you are (which I'm not).

My other point; do you (or anyone) hate them or dislike them for being how they are?
