I hate people and our arrogant ways, that just because we can blow each other up with nuclear weapons and kill each other with guns, we are therefore better than any other species and have the right no totally wipe them out.
On average, about 1 species goes extinct every 18 minutes, whether that is a particular plant or bacteria, or a large mammal (most recent was a type of dolphin just a few weeks ago) which means that with all of the species on Earth, in just 300 years, there will be NO more species.
I personally think that animals lives are far above the value of a humans and that the next species to go extinct or endangered should be well...us. We are way too overpopulated too spread out, and because we are so arrogant, we think that it doesn’t matter what we do to anything else. With the amount of trees and forests we are cutting down each year (damn, each day for crying out loud) is disgusting and is a surprise that anything can still live in those areas.
I remember a bit ago a man shot a hunter dead because the hunter was about to kill a Rhino, and he got extremely ridiculed for it and was sent to jail. But I still remember what he said before he did, he said that if someone was robbing a bank and ran out with a bag of money (basically a bag of paper) and he shot that man dead, he would be praised, perhaps even rewarded, and to see that one of our endangered animals, a living, breathing animal has less value than a silly bag of paper just disgusts me.
And we are not stopping, the Amur Leopard has less than 40 left in the wild, only six of those are females, we pushed them to extinction, I guarantee within the next couple years, there will be no more. They get so little attention because they live in the same area as the Siberian (Amur) tigers which is the Amur River Valley in Russia.
The Dusky Seaside Sparrow…it took us about 118 years to drive them to extinction after we first found them. They went extinct in 1990. The person that took care of the very last Dusky Seaside Sparrow had this to say, "The last member of the rarest species known to us. He became blind in one eye, became old for a sparrow, and yet he persisted as if he knew his sole task was to sustain the bloodline as long as possible., I wondered if he felt sorrow or excruciating panic at the thought of his oneness. Orange Band, blind in one eye, old and alone, was gone.” Orange Band was the name of the Sparrow.
I personally wouldn’t mind the removal of humans from this planet, we do nothing good.
Anyways, I am done now.
As you can see, you have gotten a few responses telling you to get over it. I won't tell you that because I agree somewhat that humans are still being irresponsible.
However, your math on this interests me.
They liberally estimate between 3 million to 100 million species and realistically estimate between 5 and 20 million. http://canadianbiodiversity.mcgill.ca/english/species/index.htm
We are in one of the fastest extinction rates in all of Earth's history. Where did you get the stat on a species going extinct every 18 minutes?
Anyway, by your math...all species will die in 300 years. Let me show you math with your numbers.
First, there are 365.25 days in the average year. There are 24 hours in each of those days. There are 60 minutes in each of those hours soooo...you need to find out how many minutes are in the average year.
365.25*24*60=525960
Divide that number by 18 to find out how many species will die in the average year.
525960/18=29220
multiply that number by 300 to see how many species will die in 300 years
29220*300=876600
That number falls very well in between 5 million and 20 million-the current realistic estimate of how many species that are on earth.
I could not find that stat of one species becoming extinct every 18 minutes but I did find this:
"Half of all living bird and mammal species will be gone within 200 or 300 years, according to a botany professor at The University of Texas at Austin."
and
"Levin's column noted that on average, a distinct species of plant or animal becomes extinct every 20 minutes."
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/01/020109074801.htm
I don't think the species that we use for pets and food will become extinct. (Like potatoes, house plants, chickens, cows, etc.)
One thing that you, General G, are not taking into consideration is that fact that in the next few decades, we will completely unlock all of the secrets of organism genes. We will be able to completely create a species that is extinct from a saved copy of their entire genetic sequence. That is NOT science fiction. Even if we cause all species to die out in the next 300 years, we can bring all of them back with no problem and colonize those on another planet...even a terraformed planet.
One thing special about humans is that we are so intelligent, we can erase the bad things that we do...sometimes.

so, if you are against the killing of bacteria...
what do you do when you get sick? stop your white blood cells for fear of violating the inalienable rights of the microrganisms?

Why do you insist on bringing your thread into this one? This has nothing to do with your "down/fall" thread.
Edit:
Since you're intent and fixated with bringing Britney Spears into every debate. There is a thread already about her, why not go rant in there. Here's the link:

If you feel that way, then why don't you just give up and kill yourself? I don't mean that in a nasty way. If you hate people, then by extension you much hate yourself to some extent. Your existence requires the sacrifice of the animal kingdom, and the planet, so if you truly feel that way, why don't you just off yourself?

Is it important to maintain biodiversity at the expense of human civilization?
To a certain extent...yes. Humans need to stop reproducing so much.
We need a large plague that wipes out a thrid of humanity or something. Humans are so smart that all the time we are circumventing mother nature's natural population controls.

Give it some more thought please. As 'superiour' as us humans are, we are born in a society that pretty much demands us to assist in the destruction of nature in order to survive for ourselves on a individual basis. We just have little choice, but that doesn't mean you can't disagree on how we handle the planet.
Stating suicide as an answer to criticism just reminds me of the worst that human history has to offer, and I do think you have more sense than that.
Some of the posts here have been very well thought out which is more than I thought I would get, so I appreciate it. When I have more time I will comment on them.
But before I go, I have to clear this up, my last line was not referring to me committing suicide, just that my rant for the time was over.

I understood you weren't suicidal, (i've learned that people can think things so powerful, you would think it were true, and it's sad when the thinking is on the negative, it's sad, esp. if an empath might be able to tell the difference) but I felt the energy of others thinking that about you. It's funny, the labels we put on things: suidicial, crazy, unbalanced. When really, if we take the time to listen, we could understand more about each other. And yes, I felt the energy that you were suicidal so much, I was going to cut and paste a web site for help, that's how strong the thoughts were about your post.
I had a guy (white) tell me that he was with a dark black lady, and she had her baby with her (not his baby, her husband and her), and they were on some sort of work (nothing romantic). Well, he had to stop at an area in which the folks there just stared at them both, and the air was thick (they couldn't see the baby, just that she was holding one), and he said that the thought there was that he was her husband and while they ate, he said he was even thinking he was her husband b/c the thoughts about their situation was just that strong, careful about the mind of men, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's false. each of us has to be stronger then the group mind, esp. if it's out of jealousy, hate, envy, bitterness, and lastly, false assumptions and negativity, each of us has to do that.
